Zero Hour Near
For Georgians
To Go To Polls
ATLANTA,—(GPS) The Zero
hour is near for Georgia’s regis
tered voters to go to the polls
again. The occasion: The State
Democratic primary election. The
date: Wednesday, Sept. 14. The
place: Your home precinct.
Many candidates for public of
fice at various levels of govern
ment, both state and national,
will go to the post. But the center
stage spotlight, as is usually the
case in Georgia, is focused on the
gubernatorial race.
Who will win this nomination—
Former Gov. Ellis Arnall, former
Lt. Gov. Garland T. Byrd, Jimmy
Carter, James H. Gray, Lester
Maddox or Hoke O’Kelley?
The answer, of course, won’t
be known until all the votes are
cast and counted. And even then,
the contest may not be settled.
Reason: There is a possibility of
a runoff between the top two
men, in which event the runoff
election will be held Wednesday,
Sept. 28.
Arnall, who served as Georgia’s
first four-year governor in 1943-
47, started his campaign well out
in front of his five opponents
and, according to most profes
sional pollsters and veteran po
litical observers, he is still ahead
and is, as the saying goes, “the
man to beat.”
If these opinions hold fast and
a runoff does develop, which
some experts doubt, the big
question is: Who will be oppos
ing the 59-year-old former gov
ernor? Present indications are
that it will either be Maddox or
Gray.
But regardless of who wins,
either with or without a runoff,
the Democratic nominee won’t be
home free, as was the case in
such state primaries in the past.
This time he will be opposed by
a Republican candidate in the
November 8 general election. Ex-
Democrat Howard (Bo) Callaway,
who tooi. the petition route to
get in the general election ballot
rather than seeking nomination in
a GOP primary, will be the chal
lenger.
Many observers believe that El
lis Arnall is the only Democrat
in the race who can take on Cal
laway and successfully turn back
the Republican threat. They base
their opinion on three factors:
(1) Arnall made an excellent
governor before; (2) he has an
outstanding record to run on, and
(3) he is an effective, dynamic
campaigner who can expose an

Mrs. S. S. Pace, Mrs. Ira
Smith, Mrs. Runette Harris and
opponent to the voters.
Arnall himself, who thinks he
can win the primary without a
runoff, has predicted he will de
feat Callaway in the general
election by a three to one mar
gin, “and maybe more when we
really get going.”
That in a nutshell is the picture
of Georgia’s gubernatorial race
as some observers see it on the
eve of the primary. But only the
voters can write the final chap
ter. And it goes without saying
that any registered voter who
does not cast his vote on Sept.
14 is doing himself, his state,
his county and his community a
disservice.
Vote for whom you please—
but vote.
