On The Farm
Production Front
BY CARL BRACK

Fall will be here soon and so
will the Butts County Fair. Along
with the fair comes the showing
of livestock. Now is the time to
make preparations for a health
certificate for the animals you
plan to enter in the show.
This week the topics for dis
cussion are strawberry plants,
leafy vegetables, and chestnut
harvesting.
Strawberry Plant*
The main reason strawberry
plants die during the summer is
because of dry periods and no
supplemental water applied.
Strawberries have a very shallow
and fibrous root system and must
have an abundance of water dur
ing the summer. Naturally, dis
eases and insects can do damage
and should be controlled, but nev
er discount that all important
water to keep strawberries in
good condition.
Leafy Vegetable*
Remember when planting leafy
vegetables, that lime and fertili
zer are important. Most leafy
vegetables like a pH of 6.0 to 6.-
5. When grown at a lower pH,
plants remain yellow and stunted.
Soil tests should be made on veg
etable fields and gardens. Fields
that show a low pH should be
limed with dolomitic lime to ad
just the pH for future crops.
Chestnut Harvesting
Chestnut trees are one of our
most reliable producers. How
ever, each year many of the
chestnuts are lost because of im
proper handling and storage.
When most of the burrs have
opened on the trees, they should
be jarred to the soil and the nuts
picked up and placed in a dry
shaded area to cure for a period
of 3 to 6 days.
After the curing process, chest
nuts may be placed in cold stor
age. They can be kept several
months at a temperature of 32 to
40 degrees and may be kept long
er if frozen.

The wind is like the power of God.
It is invisible you can neither see nor touch it.
And yet it will carr3 r a sailboat skimming across the
waves with all the beauty and grace and freedom of
a seagull.
But whereas the wind may die and leave you drift
ing aimlessly and helplessly with the tide, the strength
of God remains eternally steadfast.
It is through the Church that man is given under
standing of this Power. For by worshipping God he
can acquire the spiritual insight which gives fuel to
his soul and purpose for his pursuits.

THE CHURCH FOR ALL...
ALL FOR THE CHURCH
The Church is the greatest factor
on earth for the building of charac
ter and good citizenship. It is a store
house of spiritual values. Without a
strong Church, neither democracy
nor civilization caa survive. There
are four sound reasons why every
person should attend services regu
larly and support the Church. They
are: (1) For his own sake. (2) For
his children’s sake. (3) For the sake
of his community and nation. (4)
For the sake of the Church itself,
which needs his moral and material
support. Plan to go to church reg\*
larly and read your Bible daily.
