Employ Handicap
Week Set For
October 2-6
The week of October 2nd
through October Bth has been pro
claimed as National Employ the
Handicapped Week. All employ
ers and the general public are
called upon to co-operate in the
observance by supporting activ
ities to further the employing of
handicapped persons.
This is the 21st anniversary of
this week, which was established
by Congress in August of 1945.
The purpose of this week is to
call attention to the need for rec
ognizing the abilities of our
handicapped citizens and giving
them a chance to be gainfully
employed.
Since the first observance more
than 5,000,000 men and women
with some type of handicap have
found gainful employment in a
variety of occupations in private
industry, and in state, federal,
and local government positions.
We are urging the employers in
our state and especially in the 7
county area served by the Griffin
Office of the Georgia State Em
ployment Service to become a
part of this celebration by hiring
one or more handicapped persons.

Carmichael Has
Rodgers’ Old
Jersey Number 29
Tommy Carmichael, Georgia
Tech kicking specialist from Jack
son, was the subject of an inter
esting article in the Atlanta
Journal September 22 by Jim
Minter, widely known Journal
sports writer.
It seems that when Tommy re
ceived his varsity jersey he put
in a special request for number
29, the reason for which Tech’s
assistant athletic publicist Rich
ard Hyatt discovered this week.
“When I was 11 years old,”
Tommy explained, “my dad used
to bring me to Atlanta to watch
Tech games and we’d sit in the
south stands where Pepper Rod
gers kicked many of his extra
points. I caught some of the balls
and took them home and told
dad that some day I was going
to kick extra points for Tech like
Pepper Rodgers.” As you may
have guessed Rodgers number
was 29.
Tommy went to Tech non
scholarshipped and according to
Minter his talent and place kick
ing was discovered by newspaper
men John Logue or Ed Miles,
publicist Ned West or Coach
Bobby Dodd, according to who is
telling the story.
Tommy had a 39-yard field
goal against A&M in the open
ing game September 17 and sent
booming kicks into the end zone
on several occasions.
Tommy says that he is kicking
better now than ever before and
recalled that when he was seven
years old he began practicing
with the fork branches of a
cedar tree in the front yard for
the goal post.
