Indian Springs
Camping Open To
Handicap Groups
ATLANTA,—(GPS) So suc
cessful was the Muscular Dystro
phy Associations of America’s
first camp outing in the South
east, held recently at Indian
Springs State Park near Jackson,
that state parks officials are en
couraging other organized handi
cap organizations to avail them
selves of the parks specially con
structed facilities.
Indian Springs State Park is
the only park in the state system
now providing specially designed
ramps and other leveled-off fa
cilities which enable handicap
ped persons to enjoy the outdoor
recreation like other campers,
State Parks Director Horace G.
Caldwell explained. He said sim
ilar facilities are in the planning
stage at Fort Yargo State Park
near Winder but that they will
not be in use this summer.
At the recent nine-day camp
outing at Indian Springs, some
60 youngsters, all victims of mus
cular dystrophy, had the time of
their lives. Despite their handi
caps, the campers enjoyed the
same activities as campers every
where. They participated in such
sports as bowling, soft ball, arch
ery and swimming. Activities also
included music, arts and craft.
The young campers, all wheel
chair victims, their healthy volun
teer aiders, college students, vol
unteer counselors and volunteer
houseparents—some 150 campers
in all—came from Georgia, Ala
bama, Florida and South Caro
lina. It was the first time many
of the handicapped campers had
the opportunity to participate in
sports of any kind. They ranged
in age from six to 20, most of
them being between 10 and 14
years of age.
This special camp utilized a
ten-building complex located in
the group camping area. Ramps
were built on the large mess hall,
four dormitories, infirmary, arts
and crafts building, and three
staff cottages. The terrain of the
park is reasonably flat and allows
easy access to beaches for swim
ming and play areas for games.
There was no charge to the
campers as the cost of the camp
was underwritten by the Muscu
lar Dystrophy Associations of
America, Inc.
In hailing the first Muscular
Dystrophy Camp as an “outstand
ing and inspiring” success, Indian
Springs Parks Supt. Frank Mc-
Michael termed it the “greatest
thing we’ve ever had here.”

Sanford Stadium
Double Deck Is
“Topped Out”
ATHENS, GEORGlA—Sanford
Stadium, home of the University
of Georgia Bulldogs, was offi
cially “topped out” when the last
of the precast concrete seats in
the double-deck addition was put
into place earlier this week.
This phase of the construction
program for expanding and mod
ernizing Sanford Stadium is pro
ceeding on schedule within the
framework of previously an
nounced plans, according to
George T. Heery of Heery &
Heery, architects and engineers
of Atlanta and Athens.
The new seating capacity of
the stadium will be approximate
ly 58,000.
The original portions of the
stadium contained only 36,000
seats. Additional 4,800 seats,
president’s box, restrooms, con
cession stands and press facilities
were added piecemeal over the
years.
These latter seats and support
facilities were considered sub
standard by the University and
architects, and were removed
prior to the new construction in
order to make way for the
double-deck expansion.
Many improvements have been
incorporated in the new design.
Entrances and exits have been
widened, anew public address
system installed and new support
facilities and public concourses
added. The upper decks of the
stadium will have aluminum
chairs and the covered club level
will have fiberglass armchairs
with a seating capacity of 2,200.
The new design for Sanford
Stadium creates 100% prime
seating and un-obstructed visabil
ity for the spectator.

Manager for the Heery & Heery
