Jackson Sailor Helps Form Huge Living Flag A Jackson sailor, Sanford Powell, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Powell, was one of 10,000 Great Lakes Navymen who recently as sembled at Chicago’s Soldier Field to form a vast “Living Flag.’’ It is believed to be the largest human flag ever created. The program was sponsored by the Navy and the City of Chicago with Chicago’s mayor, Richard J. Daley, taking part. The ball of the flag, which measured 237 feet was made up of 260 men; the pole (not in cluding the hall) measured 550 feet long, four feet in width at the top. It required 700 men. The flag itself measured 293 feet in length at the top, 73 feet long at the bottom, 428 feet wide at the left end and 128 feet wide at the right end. , Dimensions of the star field are 143 feet at top, 66 feet at the bottom, 350 feet at the left end and 184 at the right end. The white stripes of the “Liv ing Flag” require 1,600 men, the red stripes 1,900 men, the stars 1,800 men, and the blue field ap proximately 3,400. Seaman Powell has recently completed his basic training at Great Lakes and is believed the only man from Butts County to take part in forming the Human Flag. WORTHVILLE MRS. R. M.
