Kay Pinckney
Was Kiwanis
Speaker Tuesday
Miss Kay Pinckney, one of the
most outstanding Senior Girl
Scouts in the Pine Valley Council,
told Kiwanians Tuesday night of
her experience at the National
Girl Scout Conference at Kent
State University in Ohio earlier
in the Summer. The program was
arranged by Robert H. Pinckney,
who presented his daughter with
great pride.
The conference was primarily
concerned in teaching youth how
to communicate, with Kay
through use of charts explaining
some of the techniques shown the
Scouts at the conference. Kay ex
pressed appreciation to the Jack
son Kiwanis Club, sponsors of
both the Girl and Boy Scout pro
grams in Butts County, for pick
ing up the tab on her plane trip
to Akron, and for their continued
support of the scouting programs.
President Hugh Glidewell pre
sented Harry Lewis, president of
the Jackson High Key Club, a
Merit Certificate plaque for out
standing achievement during the
year 1968-69. President Glide
well also exhibited the awards
plaque presented the Jackson club
at the state meeting in Savannah
earlier this month.
Guests Tuesday night were Key
Club members Harry Lewis, Don

new members, all of whom were
presented Tuesday, will be induc

Grid Contest
Column Begins
This Week
Football fans of this area will
enjoy the upcoming grid season
with a football guessing contest,
sponsored this year by City Phar
macy, Allen’s Hom-Ond Food
Store, Jackson Hardware and
Wise Standard Station, to be held
again with cash prizes awarded
over a ten week period to the two
best prognosticators.
In addition the syndicated
sports column, “Leonard’s Los
ers,” will be carried this year dur
ing the football season under the
sponsorship of ABW Chevrolet
Company. The widely syndicated
column is different from most
as the writer, a prominent Athens
businessman, selects the loser in
stead of the winner, as is usually
done. His capsule comments on
important games of the week are
filled with wit and humor that
keep fans chuckling to them
selves.
In the guessing contest a $lO
cash prize is given by the spon
soring firms to the winner with a
second prize of $5 in cash being
awarded to the runner up.
Both features begin this week
in the Progress-Argus.

THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
( w
■ ,
The 1969 football season is upon us with all its FAN
FARE and EXCITEMENT, and I’m glad to know that I’ll
have an OPPORTUNITY again this year to SMARTEN all
of you on the OUTCOME of college football GAMES before
the teams COME OUT . . . I’ve RE-ADJUSTED my SMART
PILL MACHINE, and INCREASED the RICHNESS of the
formula, and I’m happy to report that the PILLS are SMAL
LER, but more POTENT, and will be easier for you to
SWALLOW when I roll them your way . . . I’ve also found
that they give a big BOOST to GRASS and SHRUBS if you
dissolve a few in water and SPRINKLE lightly . . . Naturally,
I was again HONORED by the NATIONAL STATISTICAL
ASSOCIATION, as the outstanding picker of LOSERS in the
world, at their convention in HANOI this summer . . . the
Uncle HO CHI MIN presented me with the AWARD, and as
a TOKEN of my APPRECIATION I gave him a LIFE TIME
supply of SMART PILLS, which he promised to take EVERY
MORNING before breakfast ... I haven’t heard from him
lately, but I’m sure he’s a lot WISER than he was when I
saw him LAST . . . Well, I guess that brings us to the business
at hand, so let’s harvest this week’s crop of losers . . .
VIRGINIA TECH vs. ALABAMA
JERRY CLAIBORNE’S GOBBLERS hold open house in
the Blacksburg LAUNDRY MAT for the Tuscaloosa DETER
GENT MERCHANTS, and when a big bad BEAR and a herd
of ELEPHANTS add TIDE to the turkey’s WASHER, things
are bound to get FOAMED up real quick . . . This should be
a SLICK CONTEST to watch, and when its run its CYCLE,
there’ll still be some DIRTY LAUNDRY in somebody’s TUB
. . . MIKE WIDGER will keep the WATER HARD in the
MIDDLE, while KINCAID, EDWARDS, and SMOOT try the
OUTER RIM looking for the SPILL-OVER that leads to the
END ZONE . . . The TIDE should RISE, but I look for an
outrageous UPSET as the feather merchants REFUSE to be
WASHED up in VIRGINIA ...
LEONARD’S LOSER ALABAMA
NO LOSERS IN A CHEVROLET
ARKANSAS vs. OKLAHOMA STATE
PORKY PIG will set his SLICK GILLETTES in motion
at Little Rock against a band of COWBOYS from STILL
WATER . . . This round-up will be no contest cause the ranch
hands have too many OPENINGS in their fences, and a wild
liog will run in and out of the CORRAL at will . . . FLOYD
GASS is the new TRAIL BOSS, and should have a CHUCK
WAGON full of HELIUM by the time FRANK BROYLES
LOADS him down with PORK RINDS and SOY BEANS . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER OKLAHOMA STATE
YOU ALWAYS WIN WITH A CHEVROLET!
AUBURN vs WAKE FOREST
SHUG JORDAN and his FELINES hold an old fashioned
REVIVAL meeting on the plains for CAL STOLL and his
CAROLINA DEACONS, and there ought to be a lot of HELL
FIRE and BRIMSTONE served before the last PEW is
EMPTIED . . . PREACHER STOLL has sat in on some south
eastern conference TENT MEETINGS before, but he’ll find
that the GOSPEL has changed since he was an ALTAR BOY
at GEORGIA . . . Things wei’en’t too good in the Winston-
Salem TEMPLE last year, and should get W’ORSE this sea
son, but a visit to the ALABAMA CAT HOUSE will be a
great REVELATION of things to come for this group of
budding MINISTERS . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER WAKE FOREST
VIRGINIA vs CLEMSON
The TOBACCO TIGERS leave a trail of SMOKE, as
they move out of DEATH VALLEY for a meeting with the
CAVALIERS from CHARLOTTESVILLE, and they’ll need all
the JUICE they can manufacture to escape this Virginia
TRAP . . . Rebuilding is the name of the game in both camps,
and that means that a lot of UNTESTED new-comers will
create EXCEDRIN HEADACHES for all concerned . . .
NICOTEEN FRANK seems to have the ADVANTAGE, and
could SWALLOW his WAD if his cats get over-confident, but
I suspect that the horsemen will end up ROLLING their
own . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER VIRGINIA
NO LOSERS IN A CHEVROLET
SOUTH CAROLINA vs DUKE
PAUL DIETZEL’S Columbia POULTRY HOUSE will be
the STAGE for TOM HARP to introduce his DURHAM
DEVILS to the CAROLINA CHICKENS ... The BLUE LU
CIFERS have a lot of HART at quarterback, and three BLUE
STREAKS at the FLANKS, but this may not be enough to
DE-FEATHER the PULLETS . . . Game cock fans are saying,
this is the year, and they could be right with SUGGS and
MUIR and SIMMONS and RICE, this might be the proper
INGREDIENTS for the best CHICKEN CASSEROLE in a
decade . . . Add a little DIETZEL OIL to the STEW, and a
lot of people could be in for a good case of HART
BURN . . . the ROLL AID line forms at the east end of the
STEEL POT . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER DUKE
YOU ALWAYS WIN WITH A CHEVROLET!
FLORIDA vs HOUSTON
The GIANT WATER LIZZARDS get their SWAMP ready
for a Texas CAT. and if they expect to keep this COUGAR
BOGGED DOWN, they had better add a lot of ELMER’S
GLUE to everything in sight . . . BILL YEOMAN’S VEER-T
offense is EXPLOSIVE, and KEN BAILEY pushes the DIS
TRUCT BUTTON often . . . CARLOS BELL and ELMO
WRIGHT are a couple of WAR-HEADS that will KNOCK
the HIDE OFF the GATOR with regularity, and leave RAY
GRAVES in a state of SHOCK long after the attack is
over . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER FLORIDA
GA. TECH vs SOUTHERN METHODIST
The INSECTS from the INSTITUTE open their ’69
campaign on the flats against a SAGGING PONY from DAL
LAS . . . HAYDEN FRY'S MUSTANGS won't have the ZIP

L. S. U. vs TEXAS A&M
CHARLEY MCCLENDON’S BAYOU BENGALS light the
FIRE under their RED STICK PRESSURE COOKER to make
things HOT for GENE STALLINGS and his FFA group from
College Station . . . The PLOW BOYS were hard hit by grad
uation, and should not CUT as DEEP a FURROW as last
year . . . Several Sophomores could SHARPEN the PLOW
POINT, but the ROCK HARD GROUND that is the TIGER
DEFENSE will WITHSTAND the EFFORT ... The end
result on the score board may not show much difference
but the FARMERS will be in line early Monday morning
LOOKING for their CROP FAILURE CHECKS . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER— TEXAS A&M
YOU ALWAYS WIN WITH A CHEVROLET!
MISSISSIPPI vs MEMPHIS STATE
JOHNNY VAUGHT’S rebels have finished their BOOT
CAMP training, and look as though they might be ready to
go into battle as SEASONED VETERANS rather than RAW
RECRUITS . . . Their FIRST LINE is STRONG, but the
REPLACEMENTS might be a LITTLE SHORT in numbers
if early season casualties are numerous . . . SPOOK MUR
PHY’S TIGERS are the defending champs in the Missouri
valley, and will be a worthy adversary for the confederates to
open against . . . OVER-CONFIDENCE won’t be a FACTOR
since the CAT has CAUGHT the MUD BALLS off base be
fore . . . An UPSET is POSSIBLE, but I can’t convince my
SMART PILL MACHINE of that . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER MEMPHIS STATE
NO LOSERS IN A CHEVROLET
GEORGIA vs TULANE
The RED CLAY HOUNDS have picked up the SHAT
TERED PIECES of their SUGAR BOWL, and formed them
selves into another CONTENDER in the CONFERENCE
and in the NATION . . . JIM PITTMAN’S GREEN WAVE
will be the first to FEEL the BITE of the BULLDOG, and
can carry the MESSAGE back to NEW ORLEANS to anyone
who may be interested . . . DOOLEY’S DEVASTATORS have
LOST their BABY FAT, and now are LEAN and FAST which
should PULL the PLUG on the WAVE and DRAIN them out
of SANFORD STADIUM in short order ... The FLIGHT
BACK to the CRESCENT CITY should be PSYCHODELIC
with the BLACK and BLUE mixed in with the WAVES
GREEN . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER TULANE
YOU ALWAYS WIN WITH A CHEVROLET!
N. C. STATE vs NORTH CAROLINA
The WOt,F PACK awaits the arrival of the RAM SET
from CHAPEL HILL, and EARL EDWARDS is planning on
GETTING BILL DOOLEY’S GOAT again this year . . . CARO
LINA DOGS have NO FEAR of the MOUNTAIN GOATS
and with good reason . . . It’s OLD DOGS against NEW and
UNEXPERIENCED BILLIES, and the DE-HORNING process
should be quite simple ... A big VICTORY BAR-B-QUE is
indicated in Raleigh this Saturday night with the BLUE
GOATS as GUESTS OF HONOR . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER NORTH CAROLINA
YOU ALWAYS WIN WITH A CHEVROLET!
CALIFORNIA vs TEXAS
The GOLDEN BEARS could be a SLEEPER on the
west coast ths year, with a SOLID DEFENSE and a POTEN
TIALLY POTENT OFFENSE . . . Many QUESTIONS will
be ANSWERED by DARRELL ROYAL and his LONG HORNS
when they STAMPEDE into town for a WESTERN RODEO
. . . Regardless of the outcome, the Bears won’t be a SLEEP
ER any longer ... The HERD will WAKE THEM up for good,
and thev could need HYPNOTISM to get their EYES CLOSED
again . . . RAY WILLSEY ought to STOCK UP on NO-DOZE
for those long nights he’ll start having after Saturday . . •
