STEVE BENNETT
Steve Bennett is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ben
nett of Indian Springs. He
is a sophomore tackle,
standing 5’ 10”. and weigh
ing 180 pounds. Steve is
having a fine year for his
first season on the varsity
after having played on the
“B” team in 1968.
Already this year Steve
has made several key de
fensive plays for the Devils,
among these, recovering two
fumbles and blocking a
punt.
Although hampered some
what by a shoulder injury,
Steve should be at full
speed when the Red Devils
continue their region sched

down. Clarence Norris carried for
5 to the 8 yard line. With 4:10
remaining, halfback Larry Fears
bucked over for the touchdown.
(Fears gets special recognition
for his run because he is coming
off the injured list. He ran 1 time
in the whole game) The extra
point was successful by Clarence
Norris to make the final score
Henderson 24 —Monticello 14.
Coach Joe Davis was pleased
with the offense and defense. The
offense in particular was really
rough. On the ground, the Tigers
ground out 219 yards. The lead
ing rusher, Jerry Respress, gained
51 yards on 6 carries and scored
8 points. Tyrone Horne was next
rushing with 6 carries for 45
yards. The Tigers surprise sen
sation, Rickey White, had 40
yards on 5 carries. Theodore
Thurman carried 4 times for 32
yards; Robert Griffin, 2 carries
for 11 yards; Larry Fears, 1
carry for 7 yards on a TD; Cur
tis Taylor 1 carry for 5 yards;
Robert Henderson, 1 carry for
4 yards and Alfonza Simms, 1
carry for 2 yards.
In the passing department the
Tigers completed 6 out of 12
passes for 50 yards. Clarence
Norris completed 3 of 7 passes
for 30 yards and Curtis Taylor
completed 3 of 5 for 20 yards.
In the defense, Calvin White,
brother of Rickey, led the de
fense as usual. Anyone who
played games as good as Calvin
did would be really happy. But
as records show this was one of
Calvin’s lesser games. He made
7 individual tackles and 7 assists.
Rounding out the defense, Eu
gene Myricks was 4 and 6; Lu
ther Morgan 4 and 3; Robert
Griffin 4 and 2; George Akins,
4 and 4; Kenneth White 3 and
3; Theodore Thurman 3 and 2;
Frankie Varner 3 and 1; Ollie
Woodard 3 and 2; Clarence Nor
ris 3 and 0; Larry Walker 1 and
2; J. W T . Jefferson 3 and 1;
Hozie Folds 1 and 0; Rickey

BILLY GLIDEWELL
Billy Glidewell is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh M.
Glidewell of Jackson. A 205
pound junior tackle, Billy is
the biggest and strongest
player on the Red Devil
squad.
Exceptionally quick for
his size, very aggressive,
and a fine blocker, Billy is
playing first string for his
third consecutive year at
Jackson High School.
If Billy continues to grow
and improve, he should be
one of the finest linemen
ever to play at Jackson and
a candidate for regional and
sectional honors during his
senior year.

STEVE FLETCHER
Steve Fletcher, sopho
more, 155 lb. split end, de
fensive end and middle
guard, was a stand-out on
the “B” team last year. He
has worked hard and is a
most improved Red Devil.
He is a natural pass re
ceiver and should, in the
future, prove his abilities.
He is a player who has a
knack for making a great
play. Within the next two
years much will be heard
from Steve Fletcher.
On defense, he has al
ready begun to stand out.
He has made many tackles
when opponents threatened
his side of the line. Steve
also plays middle guard and
will eventually rival Ken
ny Waits at this position.
Steve is a good student
and shows the true Red
Devil spirit at Jackson High
School.
Steve is the son of Mrs.
Marion Crane of Indian
Springs.

Another great weekend of college football has come and
gone, and the HISTORY BOOKS will record my 82% accuracy
effort in the prognostication department . . . Several upsets
kept me out of the 90% COUNTRY, but that’s what makes
this such an interesting profession . . . F. S. U. and MICH
IGAN lost by surprising margins, but the biggest surprise
came at GRANT FIELD in ATLANTA, when the HUMBLE
BUMBLES STUMBLED over a PUSSY CAT from CLEMSON
and the ALUMNI started singing BYE BYE BUD . . . The
HONEYMOON is over now, and the MEAT of the SCHED
ULES is coming up for most teams, so it will take a lot more
THOUGHT and CONCENTRATION to maintain my FAN
TASTIC average for the balance of the year . . . The old
SMART PILL MACHINE just turned itself on, so I guess it’s
time to pick this week’s losers . . .

ARMY vs NOTRE DAME
TOM CAHILL got his MULES HITCHED to the WRONG
END of a TEXAS PLOW last week, and came out about 7
furrows SHORT at lay-by time . . . This week, they are back
at HUDSON ACRES, but the IRISH are also going to be
there, and the BLACK KNIGHTS might get their PLOW
HUNG up for good if they don’t get more MULE POWER at
work ... The POPE’S PUPILS will SEW the SEEDS of
DISASTER for the CADETS to HARVEST all season long . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER ARMY
NO LOSERS IN A CHEVROLET
PENN STATE vs WEST VIRGINIA
JIM CARLEN sends his MOUNTAINEERS ON A BIG
CAT HUNT in Pennsylvania and they should find all the
ACTION they want when they enter the DEN at UNIVER
SITY PARK, where JOE PATERNO keeps his LEOS
CHAINED up during the WEEK . . . Unfortunately, the MOR
GANTOWN HILLBILLY arrives on SATURDAY and the
LIONS will be OUT for an afternoon of FUN and FROLIC,
which can only be BAD NEWS for the visitors . . . The HILL
MEN will ESCAPE with their LIFE, but they’ll have a LION
SIZED HOLE in the SyEAT of the OVERALL.

MICHIGAN vs PURDUE
The WOLVERINES got CHEWED up by a SHOW ME
CAT last week, and are looking forward to a BOILERMAKER
to SIP on over the weekend to EASE the PAIN . . . The only
problem is that the INDIANA BARTENDERS will serve only
MOLLENKOPF cocktails, and these should put the CON
SUMER out of his MISERY, but not the way BO SCHEM
BECHLIfR had it planned ... The ANN ARBOR PHARMACY
will have a run on ASPIRIN and EXCEDRIN for the king
sized HEADACHES in HANG-OVER country on Saturday
night . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER MICHIGAN

OHIO STATE vs MICHIGAN STATE
WOODY HAYES and his BUCKEYES open their CO
LUMBUS SUPER MARKET for the LANCERS to RE-STOCK
their food SUPPLY that was DEPLETED last week at, an
IRISH BANQUET . . . The SPARTANS will PAY a HIGH
PRICE for any CALORIES they take out of OHIO, and I
expect they’ll decide to TRAVEL LIGHT for another week
as the COST of LIVING INDEX is posted on the SCORE
BOARD ... The FRIENDLY OHIO GROCERS might give
HUGH DAUGHERTY a BAG of NUTS as a present to take
home with him, but he’ll probably find they are the SAME
ONES he CAME shopping WITH . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER MICHIGAN STATE

TEXAS vs OKLAHOMA
DARRELL ROYAL’S LONGHORNS hit the trail to
DALLAS for the annual round-up meeting with the SOON
ERS from NORMAN . , . This RAIL-HEAD will be a HUB
of ACTIVITY when the CLAIM JUMPERS try to LOAD the
STEERS into COVERED WAGONS for the trip north . . .
CHUCK FAIRBANKS will see to it that some of the BULLS
will LOSE their HORNS, but he’ll get his CANVAS RIPPED
in the process and will have to RIDE his WAGON home with
its tongue hanging out . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER OKLAHOMA

VANDY vs ALABAMA
The NASHVILLE NAVY got its ANCHOR hung on a
MOUNTAIN TOP in CAROLINA, and had to SCUTTLE most
of its FLEET in order to get back to the CUMBERLAND
BASIN in time to ride out a HIGH TIDE from ALABAMA . . .
What few SHIPS are left won’t be able to HIDE from the
TIDE, when the WATERS RECEED, they’ll all be in DRY
DOCK for major REPAIRS ... The CRIMSON FLOOD will
leave its MARK on the FLEET, and when they put back out
to sea, theyll have RED SAILS in the SUNSET . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER VANDY
YOU ALWAYS WIN WITH A CHEVROLET!
AUBURN vs CLEMSON
The ALABAMA CAT HOUSE will be OVER LOADED
this weekend when TWO sets of TIGERS try to take over the
PARLOR, and set up shop . . . SHUG’S CATS have the inside
track since they HOLD the DEEDS to the PROPERTY, but
FRANK HOWARD thinks he OWNS the WORLD since he
EXTERMINATED the INSECTS in their own HIVE . . . This
DELUSION of GRANDEUR will come to an end when the
TOY TIGERS from NICOTEEN FLATS run up on the REAL
THING in a STRIPED SUIT with a FULL SET of CUSPIDS
. . . DEATH VALLEY will seem like a SEA of TRANQUIL
ITY by the time the CAROLINA FELINES get out of the
CLIFF HARE DEN . . .

FLORIDA vs TULANE
The GIANT WATER LIZZARDS have just about CON
VINCED me that my SMART PILL MACHINE has got a bad
TUBE . . . They are looking more and more like a CROCK
of DYNAMITE that could BLOW the pre-season POLLS out
of business . . . When JIM PITTMAN and his THIN GREEN
RIPPLE float into Gainesville this week, they won’t do any
thing to keep VICTORY number 4 from going up on the
board . . . JOHN REEVES and the other YOUNG GATORS
must be WEARING a NEW BRAND of ALLIGATOR SHOES,
cause they are making TRACKS like nobody ever saw in the
SWAMP before . . .

MISSISSIPPI vs GEORGIA
The REBEL ARTILLERY almost PENETRATED an
ELEPHANT’S HIDE last week, and now are DUG in on the
JACKSON BATTLEFIELD awaiting the K-9 INVASON from
GEORGIA . . . Thev had better get their BIG GUNS fully
LOADED because GENERAL DOOLEY’S forces are BIG and
VERSATILE, and have an AIR FORCE to go with their
TANKS and HALF TRACKS . . . JOHNNY VAUGHT could
DEFENSE against n TANK called KEMP or a FIGHTER
PILOT called CAVAN, but while he was doing that he’d prob
ably get run over by a couple of SIDEWINDERS called
HUGHES and SMILEY . . . The DOGS got SLICKED up on
CHICKEN FAT last week, and should SLIP by the CON
FEDERATES while they are taking their RABIES SHOTS . . .

TENNESSEE vs GEORGIA TECH
BUD’S BUMBLES FLY into KNOXVILLE hoping to find
a nice SOFT spot to LAND and INSERT a BENT STINGER
while the MOUNTAIN MEN are LOADING up their SQUIR
REL RIFLES, but they’ll find that the VOL SURFACE is a
lot TOUGHER to DENT than the HIDE on a PAPER TIGER
from CLEMSON WAS . . . The YELLOW JACKETS will
RUZZ around and try to CATCH the RIFLEMEN off guard,
but will have to make a CRASH LANDING when BOBBY
SCOTT gives them a quick SPRAY with “HOT SHOT’’ and
KILLS them DEAD . . . OLD BEES never die, they just
DUDISH what comes NATURALLY, and they are naturally
going to BEND their PRONG on this TARTAN TURF . . .

The MATZA WARRIORS CATCH a Bengal TIGER by
the TAIL on Friday night, and will spend the rest of the
evening trying to figure out how to TURN HIM' LOOSE . . .
CHARLEY McCLENDON’S FELINES are FEROCIOUS and
will take the PUNCH out of their HURRICANE and make
it look like a GENTLE TRADE WIND . . . This game will
be played in the ORANGE BOWL, but CHARLEY TATE and
IRISH COFFEE group will feel more like they’ve been in a
PUNCH BOWL by the final gun . . .

SOUTHERN CAL vs STANFORD
JOHN McKAY nnd his GREEN GATORS get the COL

some of them might make an IMPRESSION if they CATCH
the HORSES using their WOODEN HEADS to SIT on ... I
have a feeling that the MEN from TROY could fee] like CUS
