Don't Make
It Easy For
Burglars
ATLANTA, Oct 7—Some 30,-
317 burglars were reported to
law enforcement agencies in
Georgia last year, although a few
common sense rules by citizens
would have frustrated the efforts
of the foot-pad and second story
man, advises the Insurance In
formation Institute.
Countrywide, reports of the
Federal Bureau of Investigation
show a total of 1.8 million bur
glaries during 1968, averaging
$298 per burglary, or a total loss
of $545 million. Burglaries of
residential property amounted to
54 per cent of the total of s3ll
million, while burglaries of non
residential property accounted for
46 per cent of the total or $234
million.
Since 1960, residential bur
glaries in the nighttime have in
creased 91 per cent, while day
time residential burglaries in
creased 247 per cent. Nonresi
dential burglaries in the night
increased 57 per cent and day
time burglaries jumped 124 per
cent during the same eight year
period.
The Institute recommends that
when you’re in town, keep all
doors and windows, including the
.:ttic and basement, locked. When
you go out in the evening, leave
a few lights on. Don’t leave lad
ders lying around the property
for easy use by burglars.
W hen you go away don’t broad
cast the fact that you’re leaving
on a vacation or on a weekend
trip. Suspend in advance delive
ries of milk, newspapers and mail.
Before you leave for vacation,
a; k immediate neighbors and local
police to keep an eye on the
house. Arrange with someone to
mow the lawn if you plan to be
gone long.
A house that’s dark night after
night is inviting to the burglar.
Perhaps a neighbor would be
willing to turn your lights on
and off at appropriate times each
evening. Or, install a timing de

Never take chances on a bur
glar’s having a key to your home.
Change the locks whenever you
move or lose a key. Don’t make
forced entry easy. Use heavy
screens or windows and double
locks on doors. Don’t employ do
mestic servants without checking
references carefully. Don’t give
your exact address when adver
tising expensive articles for sale.
Thieves read the want ads, too.
Don’t keep large amounts of
cash and expensive valuables such
as jewelry in dresser drawers or
other easy-to-spot places. Put
them in a safe or a safe deposit
box for safe keeping.
The Insurance Information In
stitute cautions that although in
surance against theft is included
in all homeowners insurance poli
cies, consider purchasing separate
coverage for items of high value
such as furs, jewelry, cameras
and antiques.
Above all, keep an inventory
of personal belongings, as well as
a list of serial numbers of such
items as color television sets,
typewriters and sewing machines.
Detailed descriptions of stolen
items will be helpful to the police
in case a burglar DOES strike . . .
