Heart Attack
Claims Life
Marcus Hardy
Mr. Marcus D. Hardy, 58, of
216 Park Avenue, Jackson, died
Saturday night at Sylvan Grove
Hospital after apparently suffer
ing a heart attack. Mr. Hardy
lived about 15 minutes after ar
riving at the hospital.
A native of Clanton, Alabama,
he was the son of the late Mr.
Oscar D. Hardy and Mrs. Malissa
Joiner Hardy. He was a retired
employee of Avondale Mills.
Funeral services were conduc
ted Monday afternoon at three
o’clock from the graveside in
Sardis Baptist Church cemetery
in Henry County with the Rev.
James Baxter officiating. Sher
rell Funeral Home was in charge
of arrangements.
Mr. Hardy is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Lillie Mitchell Hardy;
five sons, Dearcy Hardy, Wil
liam Hardy, Wayne Hardy,
Johnny Hardy, Randall Hardy,
all of Jackson; three daughters,
Linda Hardy, Glenda Hardy, and
Shirley Hardy, all of Jackson;
one brother, Bill Hardy of Jack
son.

Mrs. Walter Matthews will be
interested to know that Mr. Mat
thews is expected to undergo
surgery during next week at Em
ory University Hospital, where
he has been a patient since Oc
tober 6th.

Wins First In
Beauty Contest
Miss Barbara Barkley of Hen
derson High School won the cov
eted title of “Miss Butts County”
at the Butts County Fair last
Tuesday night, October 7th.
There were 12 participants in the
beauty contest.
Miss Barkley was awarded $25
for her first place finish with
Miss Shirley Shannon, also a sen
ior, placing second and Miss Pa
tricia Barlow placing third.
In the talent contest, Miss Ber
nice Goodrum received first prize
by giving an oration by Marvin
B. Mison entitled, “I Am A Neg
ro.” Second prize went to a group
of seniors called “The Ebony
Singers” who sang a song made
famous by the Edwin Hawkins
Singers, “Oh Happy Day.” Third
prize went to a group from the
FFA class.
The entire program was ad
judged a success.

in Germany, is slowly improving
being able to get around in a
wheel chair and walker and write
with his left hand.

and around in her home.

Miss Eleanor Moncrief, for sev
eral days.
