Banks Major
Lenders To
Ga. Farmers
Georgia banks were providing
farmers with more credit and
other financial services than any
other lenders at the beginning of
this year, according to Frank
Barnes, President, C&S Bank of
Jackson, who represents the
Georgia Bankers Association as
Butts County Committeeman.
During 1968, the banks main
tained their leadership in agri
cultral credit services.
Based on the 28th annual farm
lending summary of the Agricul
tural Committee of The American
Bankers Association, Mr. Barnes
reported that at the beginning of
the year, Georgia banks were
helping farmers with 242 million
in loans, 15 per cent more than
a year previous. This total in
cluded 96 million in production
loans and 146 million in farm
mortgages. At the same time, 62
million in farm loans was held
by life insurance companies; 185
million by the Federal Land
Banks; 120 million by Production
Credit Associations; and 17 mil
lion in non real estate loans, plus
10 million in real estate loans
by the Farmers Home Admini
stration. About 41 per cent of
the non real estate credit ex
tended by lending institutions to
Georgia farmers came from
banks.
Mr. Barnes said that “bankers
in Georgia are conscious of the
large capital investments required
in agriculture today and are mak
ing a concerted effort through
improved lending programs to
meet these changing credit de
mands of the state’s farmers.”

The old SMART PILL MACHINE really had a field day
last week with a WHOPPING 92% accuracy mark, and I
guess it has had enough information fed into it now to make
better COMPARATIVE PICKS than the first few weeks of
the season ... As vou remember, the BIG PILL PREDICTED
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA would be KNOCKED OFF by
NOTRE DAME, and if the CROSS BAR had been a V 2 inch
LOWER that would have been a fact . . . Several other
PREDICTIONS were PERFECT, and if I hadn’t tried to
OUT-GUESS the BOSS, I would have been a little more ac
curate .myself . . . The FROST is on the PUMPKIN this week,
and with all the WITCHCRAFT in the air, I’m sure the UP
SET BUG will come on strong just to prove what a little
gobblin he really is . . .
PENN STATE vs OHIO UNIVERSITY
The BOBCATS travel into BIG CAT country, and BILL
HESS had better have a good supply of ROLAIDS and BI
CARB, cause he’s going to be SICK of this SAFARI before
he gets back to OHIO ... JO PATERNO’S playful LEOS will
make short work of the ABBREVIATED KITTENS as they
SHARPEN up their AX to give the ATHENS FELINE a
SHORTER 808 ... If they are not CAREFUL, the cat
could have his TAIL cut off just BEHIND his EARS . . .

CLEMSON vs ALABAMA
The TOBACCO TIGERS get out of the CHURCH
LEAGUE one more time before the season ends, and this
time they catch an ENRAGED 1 ELEPHANT that has had his
IVORY CLIPPED twice in a row . . . NICOTEEN FRANK
thinks that a BULL ELEPHANT is kin to a BULL DURHAM,
but this will be one WAD he won’t get much JUICE out of . . .
Most people think ELEPHANTS get FLAT FEET from JUMP
ING out of TREES, but this week it will be from stomping
tigers . . .

FLORIDA vs VANDY
The SUB-ADMIRALS have had their DAY in the SUN
already this year, and came down with a bad case of HYDRO
PHOBIA last week, when they got CHEWED up by a MAD
DOG, and now have to face the GIANT WATER LIZZARDS
in their own SWAMP . . . BILL PACE has done a great
job of keeping his THIN ARMADA AFLOAT this long, but
the time has come when he must start USING the BILGE
PUMPS or DAVEY JONES will have anew RECRUIT in his
LOCKER . . . RAY GRAVES will let his GATORS ESCORT
the FLEET all the way to the BOTTOM before giving the
GOOD SHIP VANDY a SWAT in the BOW that will BUCKLE
the DECKS . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER VANDY
YOU ALWAYS WIN WITH A CHEVROLET!
GEORGIA vs KENTUCKY
The RED CLAY HOUNDS return to the HEDGE ROW
and hold OPEN HOUSE for a FRIENDLY KITTEN from
the BLUE GRASS state . . . This will also mark HOME
COMING for BULLDOGS THROUGHOUT the WORLD, so
JOHN RAY will be up against a PSYCHOLOGICAL WALL
before the festivities begin . . . One thing you can say for
the WILD CATS, they ain’t AFRAID to walk up and SPIT in
a BULLDOG’S EYE, but this is one BULLDOG that won’t
give them a CHANCE for a SECOND PUCKER . . . After
the LOSS to MISSISSIPPI, a lot of folks said the DOGS
were THROUGH, but VINCE DOOLEY DIPPED his K-9’s in
Bryl-Creme and THEY CAME BACK . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER KENTUCKY
NO LOSERS IN A CHEVROLET
L. S. U. vs AUBURN
The RED STICK PRESSURE COOKER is ready for the
DOUBLE TIGER TANGO when these two CATS get together
and SLUG it OUT for the BENGAL TROPHY . . . SHUG’S
FELINES have made a great RECOVERY since their TEN
NESSEE ILLNESS, and should give the BAYOU TIGERS a
DOSE of their OWN MEDICINE . . . The only trouble is that
CHARLIE McCLENDON’S TIGERS have made a great RE
COVERY, and they AIN’T even BEEN SICK ... All indica
tions are that this one will be SETTLED by a CATS PAW, and
the HOME CATS have a BIGGER PAW . . .

KANSAS STATE vs OKLAHOMA
CHUCK FAIRBANKS drives his PRAIRIE SCHOONER
into MANHATTAN this Saturday, and he won’t be trying
to TRADE BEADS to INDIANA to BUY this piece of
GROUND . . . The only thing that will be on the SOONERS
MINDS will be the LOCAL WILD CAT, and how to TRAP
HIM . . . This may be a little more DIFFICULT task than
meets the eye since VINCE GIBSON has used a little TUR
PENTINE on his FELINES, and they are FIERCE . . .
STEVE OWENS may be able to SLOW the DEN MATES
down with his PILE DRIVING tactics, and keep them RUN
NING in CIRCLES looking for WATER . . .

TEXAS vs RICE
The LONG HORNS rested up with OPEN DATE last
week, and have practically the SAME THING with RICE
on Saturday . . . The OWLS haven’t been too potent this
year, and should use BETTER JUDGMENT than to FLY
INTO this STAMPEDE . . . OWLS may be WISE, but they
AIN’T USING their SMARTS too good in the SCHEDULE
DEPARTMENT . . . DARRELL ROYAL will FATTEN his
BULLS up on BIRD CASSEROLE using some of UNCLE
BEN’S CONVERTED GRAIN as a side order . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER RICE

SOUTHERN CALIF, vs GEORGIA TECH
The TROJANS got their EYE DOTTED in SOUTH
BEND, and should be ready to make a real WRECK out of
a RAMBLING BUMBLE BEE that got INDEPENDENT too
fast . . . The INSECTS have completely LOST their STING- .
ER, and are now GUMMING their way through the schedule,
so the MEN from TROY have only to LOOK OUT for a
LOOSE TOOTH here and there as potential DANGERS . . .
After this TRIP to the WEST COAST, the NORTH AVEN
UE BELL HOPS will have a bad case of TRENCH MOUTH,
and will really look forward to GOING to the DEVIL from
DURHAM next week ...

STANFORD vs U. C. L. A.
The BRUINS just keep on GROWLING along toward
the ROSE BOWL, and it looks as though TOMMY PROTHRO
means to keep them DANCING until the last FIDDLE is
through . . . He may have to PAY the FIDDLER this week,
when FIDDLING JOHN RALSTON PICKS out a NEW TUNE
with his STANFORD BOW AND ARROW COMBO that
could be too FAST to DANCE to . . . The Indians have a
HOT HAND and a QUICK TOMMY HAWK, and might DE
FUR the BEARS trip to Pasadena in one UPRISING, if the
TEEPEE POLE don’t BEND . . .

F. S. U. vs MISSISSIPPI STATE
The SEMI-HOLES returned to the reservation in time
to hold their POW WOW on DOG DAYS, which starts at
SUNDOWN on Saturday night . . . CHARLIE SHIRA will
turn his MAROON PUPS loose around the COUNCIL FIRE
and the BRAVES will play RED DOG all night until some
body BETS the POT with FOUR ACES ... The SIGN of
the DOG is usually a BAD OMEN, but this is a WEAK SIGN
by a WEAK DOG and the SEMIs won’t have to use up too
many of their WITCH DOCTORS to get RID of this HEX . . .
LEONARD’S LOSER MISSISSIPPI STATE
YOU ALWAYS WIN WITH A CHEVROLET!
HOUSTON vs OLD MISS.
The ASTRO-DEN will be the TARGET for the con
federate ARTILLERY when JOHNNY VAUGHT moves his
troops in position for the BATTLE of HOUSTON, and the
SKINNING of the CAT . . . From all indications the REBELS
are READY but the COUGARS have been SHARPENING
up their CLAWS for two weeks, and may not ROLL OVER
and PLAY DEAD . . . There will be plenty of FIRE WORKS
during the heat of the BATTLE, and I have a strange feeling
that this will turn out to be a DEN of INIQUITY for the
INVADERS . . .
