THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
Henderson,
Woodbury
Split Pair
BY STEVEN BALL
On Friday night, December
sth the Henderson Tigers played
host to Woodbury High School
of Woodbury with the Tigers
winning one and losing one.
The Tigers came out victori
ous in the girl’s game, winning
by a score of 47 to 40. The Ti
gerettes, led by Aretha Pye’s 27
points, never trailed during any
stage of the game. At halftime
the score was 25 to 22 but that
was as close as Woodbury came
to taking the lead. The remainder
of the Tigerettes points were
scored by Regenia Lawrence, who
added 13, and Patricia Barlow,
who contributed five points.
Coached by Mr. C. L. Gaye,
the Tigerettes have thus far en
joyed a good start in winning
five games arid dropping three.
The girls have won over Fair
mont, Drake, Booker, and Fair
mont again. They dropped games
to Butler, Westside and Roberta.
The girls leading scorer for the
season is Aretha Pye with 131
points, second is Regina Law
rence with 77 points, third is Pa
tricia Barlow with 75 points.
In the games against Wood
bury, the girls got a look at the
best free throw shooter the team
has faced thus far in Sarah
Thompson. She scored 30 points
and had 18 of them coming from
the free throw line. Rounding out
the scoring Janet Kendricks had
8 points and Cynthia Wright had
2 points for Woodbury.
In the boy’s game, the Tigers
were pinned with their sixth loss
of the season as compared with
two wins. Woodbury dealt the
boys a 64 to 69 loss. The Tigers
were never really out of the
game until the clock showed 2:45
left in the game. A quick surge
by Woodbury wrapped it up.
The Tigers high point man was
John Webb with 14 points, Bobby
Lawrence and John Sims each
had eight points. Harold Webb
and Henry McDowell had 4
points, George Akin and Clarence
Norris 5 points, Nathaniel Law
son 6 points, Ollie Woodard 3
and Larry Brownlee 2.
For the Woodbury Trojans,
Tyrone Stevens had 20 points to
take high scoring honors. Also
scoring was Leroy Dunlap, who
hit 16 points, Melvin Thompson
had 13, Robert Algord 8, Eddie
Anthony 0, and Willie Prather,
who popped 2 points.
The leading scorer for the sea
son is Clarence Norris, with a
total of 85 points, second is John
Sims, 50 points, third is Oillie
Woodard, 44 points.
With a 2 and 6 record, let’s
all hope the boys will improve
their record as the season pro
gresses.

Devotional
BY REV. RAY DUNAHOO
Pastor, Jackson United
Methodist Church
Everyone, all ages, and every
station in life is looking forward
to Christmas. Glittering lights and
frosty tinsel sends a magic spell
over the community. It is a time
of love and joy. As we antici
pate the birthday of Jesus Christ,
what can we see?
Above and beyond the decor
of Christmas we can see the mo
ments of individual people. Some
individuals are spending time, ef
fort and money for the benefit
of others. Yet, at the same time
other individuals are spending
their efforts simply for them
selves. Out of this situation the
| birth of Jesus Christ was neces
sitated ; that God would enter the
individual life to bring love and
concern for others.
On the other hand, as we look
for Christmas, we see the dilem
ma of a spiritually darkened
world. Hunger grips millions.
War is tearing out the heart of
the world’s leading powers. Un
rest and disappointment are
breeding distrust and frustration
in the lives of the youth. There
is no source of inner strength to
be seen. It is a time of dilemma.
Nations and peoples are experi
encing the world’s dark street.
Christmas could change things.
We could be as the little girl,
who late one evening ran into
the house calling her father,
“Father, Father, until the streets
were darkened, we never saw the
stars.”
Looking for Christmas, we can
see that the streets of human ex
perience are spiritually dark.
High above our wants, centered
in the midst of our struggles,
shines the ancient Star of Beth
lehem. The “Faith of Our Fath
ers” lives on. The light of en
couragement, strength, forgive
ness and hope still shines. As you
look for Christmas, gaze down the
street of your life and if dark
ness is there, you can see the
star. His light of hope. This was
the “First Noel,” God had come
into the life of man.
