Asbury Heads
Butts Chamber
Commerce Again

Bank, was re-elected president of
the Butts County Chamber of
Commerce, Inc. at a meeting of
the Board of Directors Friday
morning. Other officers elected
include David Ridgeway, vice
president; Richard W. Watkins,
treasurer; and Miss Elizabeth Mc-
Michael, secretary.
Members of the Board of Di
rectors include Hal Summers, P.
H. Weaver, L. W. May, Frank
Forehand and Messrs. Watkins,
Asbury and Ridgeway.
The annual Chamber of Com
merce dinner meeting was held
Thursday night at seven o’clock
at the Jackson Clubhouse with
W. N. Galphin Jr., head of In
dustrial Executive Department
of the First National Bank of
Atlanta, as guest speaker.
At the meeting Thursday night
six nominees for director were
voted on with Messrs. Forehand,
May and Watkins being elected.
Mr. Galphin said that it takes
an industry an average of six
months to decide on anew loca
tion and that it is imperative for
leaders of the community to have
pertinent information about their
city and county at their finger
tips so that it can be presented
immediately. The speaker told of
the tremendous competition for
industrial sites and emphasized
the importance of community at
titudes and a community wide ef
fort to attract the high priority
plants.
Mr. Asbury sketched projects
undertaken by the chamber dur
ing the past 12 months and had

son/Butts County again winning
first place in the Stay and See
Georgia Contest. Mr. Asbury
thanked the Butts County Com
missioners for allowing the cham
ber to establish the tourist infor
mation center in the old police
booth on the courthouse square
and reported on its renovation.
Mr. Asbury also reported on a
parking meter survey recently
conducted by the chamber which
indicates a large number of per
sons are in favor of a change in
procedure or doing away entirely
with parking permits. Mr. Asbury
said that results of the survey
had been submitted to the Mayor
and Council of the City of Jack
son.
Mr. Asbury presented plaques
to four former Chamber of Com
merce presidents, among them be
ing Vincent Jones, instrumental
in organizing the Chamber of
Commerce and serving as first
president in 1957-58; J. T. Beck
ham, president from 1958-61 and
1964-65; R. F. Armstrong, 1961-
64 and 1965-67; Hugh Glidewell,
1967-68. Mr. Jones was unable
to be present, his plaque being ac
cepted by his brother, Doyle
Jones, Jr.
Mr. Asbury called on Larry
Gridley, Executive Director of
the Mclntosh Trail Area Develop
ment and Planning Commission,
who briefed the large crowd on
progress toward locating the sec
ond greater Atlanta Airport in
Henry County. Mr. Gridley said
Friday morning that a public
meeting concerning the airport
will be held in Atlanta on Decem
ber 19th at which time it is spec
ulated that announcement of the
location may be made.

FIRE DEPARTMENT PUTS
OUT FIRE AT JENKINSBURG
The Volunteer Jackson Fire
Department, both trucks, an
swered a call to Jenkinsburg Sat
urday morning to extinguish a
grass fire behind the Miller
Apartments. The small blaze was
quickly brought under control.
However, excitement prevailed
for a short time when a woman
called Watson Vaughn, Jackson
Police Chief, to report the gas
tanks afire at Westbury Medical
•Care Home in Jenkinsburg. The
trucks hurried to the scene as
did a number of volunteer fire
fighters and spectators, but
thankfully the fire was discovered
to be behind the apartments and
of a minor nature.

Is Custodian
At Post Office
Willie Lee Corbett, 46, of Grif
fin, has been named custodian at
the Jackson Post Office, succeed
ing Marvin Rich, who retired Oc
tober 31st after 35 years of ser
vice.
Announcement of Mr. Corbett’s
association with the local post
office was made by John P. Hunt,
Jackson postmaster.
Mr. Corbett was born in Wayne
County, North Carolina, serving
in the Army as a draftee from
1944 to 1946. He reenlisted in
1948 and served until October 31,
1968, serving many years over
seas and receiving several medals,
decorations and citations.
Shortly after his discharge Mr.
Corbet worked for a short while
with the North Carolina Highway
Department and was transferred
to Jackson from the Atlanta
Army Depot at Conley where he
served as a guard. Mr. Corbett is
married, his wife being employed
in Griffin and if the opportunity
presents itself for Mrs. Corbett
to find work in Jackson the
couple intends to move here as
soon as possible.
