David Lunsford
Is Named Top
FCA Athlete
“Wow! Look at those arms and
hOW thick his neck is. He’s huge.”
T h e se were some of the comments
overheard at the first annual
Christian Athlete of the year ban
quet about Paul Anderson, the
•■World’s Strongest Man.” The
b an quet, under the sponsorship of
the Brotherhood of First Baptist
Church, Jackson, and the Fellow
ship of Christian Athletes, was
held Monday night at the high
school lunchroom.
Anderson proved undoubtedly
that he was the world’s strongest
man as he nailed two solid boards
together with his bare hands and
backlifted nine big athletes seat
ed on a platform. However, he
convinced an audience of nearly
200 people that he is just as dy
namic a speaker as weightlifter.
He spoke eloquently of his strong
faith in Christ and brought an in
spiring message to both the young
and old in the audience. Anderson
is an active member of the Fellow
ship of Christian Athletes and
is kept busy on the banquet cir
cuit.
The banquet will be an annual
affair honoring the Jackson High
School athletes and hopes to be
one of the sport highlights of the
year. A Country Boy supper of
eggs, grits, ham, and biscuits was
served.
Lamar McMichael, president of
the First Baptist Brotherhood, cli
maxed the big evening when he
announced the annual award win
ner of “Outstanding Christian
Athlete.” David Lunsford was
tapped with the high honor and
received a beautiful silver cup
trophy. He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Vess Lunsford and is a sen
ior at Jackson High School.
David played end on the Jack
son Red Devil football team, and
is now active in basketball. He is
a member of Westside Baptist
Church where he is active in
church affairs. He is also a mem
ber of the FCA. David was elect
ed by his fellow athletes for this
high honor.

The Devilettes in their third
game were victorious over Lo
ganville Girls 42-31. All three
forwards scored in double fig

nard and Carole Lawrence both
scoring 12 points each. The
guards played by Doris Greene,
Andrea Holston, Patrice March
man and substitute Sherry Barnes
were outstanding even though all
four guards had four fouls for
the last five minutes.
This being our first win of
fers encouragement that there
will be more wins to come. Coach
Hutcheson stated, “We continue
to improve each week and as soon
as our offense and defense get
together on the same night, we
will be capable of playing a bet
ter brand of basketball.
Jackson High Red Devils over
whelmed the Loganville Red
Devils 72-33. This is Jackson’s
first win and let us hope we have
begun our winning season.
Nathaniel Thurman again led
the scoring with 19 points, Randy
Moss was second with 16, Victor
Davis added 13, James Head 10,
Bill Nelson 7, David Lunsford 4,
Fred Head 2, and Don Cook 1.
Jackson’s defense was very
strong and only allowed no more
than 11 points in any one quar
ter. Victor Davis in defense re
bounded 21, Nelson pulled down
10, Randy Moss 9, to lead the de
fense.
Jackson continues to improve
as they showed remarkable im
provement during Rockdale Cos.
game and now even greater im
provement in their victory over
Loganville.
ONION CONTROL
Wild onion and wild garlic in
Georgia lawns can be controlled
if homeowners will spray each
fall and spring for at least three
years, according to specialists
with the University of Georgia
Cooperative Extension Service.
Late November is a good time for
the fall application.
