Honored By Children On
Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary
fjjlk fftnß MjL
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Cawthon
were honored by their children
on Sunday afternoon, November
16, with an open house in observ
ance of their fiftieth wedding an
niversary. Some 200 guests called
between the hours of three and
five o’clock to extend congrat
ulations to the couple.
Beautiful flower arrangements
of gold and white were used
throughout the home. Mrs. Caw
thon wore a corsage of yellow
rosebuds and Mr. Cawthon a sin
gle yellow bud. The three-tiered
cake, decorated with yellow roses
and topped with golden bells and
the number “50”, was cut by Mrs.
James Moore. Gold colored punch,
nuts, yellow and white mints were
served.
Fifty years ago, on November
16, the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Lewis White on Hemlock Street
in Jackson, was the setting for
the wedding uniting two couples,
Bessie Chambers and Elmer F.
Cawthon, and Grace Thaxton and
Robert E. Chambers. The late
Judge Howard Ham performed
the ceremony. This event united
three of Butts County’s outstand
ing families. Like their parents,
these couples and their children
have contributed much to the
civic and spiritual growth of the
county.
After several years in the coun
ty Mr. and Mrs. Chambers and
their son, Leon, moved to Atlan
ta. However after “Mr. Robert”
entered the ministry they have
been back at intervals serving
several Baptist churches in this
area.
Mr. and Mrs. Cawthon have
lived in Eutts County these fifty
years. Seven children were born
into this home. Four sons, Frank
lin, Lewis, Porter and Joel, and
three daughters, Kathleen, Myra
and Martha, are still living. Mr.
and Mrs. Cawthon now enjoy 24
grandchildren and two great
grandchildren. Only two deaths
have occurred in this large fam
ily circle.
