Men and machinery are dwarfed by the great width
of this ring-shaped cooling tower under construction
at the site of Georgia Power Company’s new Etowah
steam-electric generating plant west of Cartersville.
Nearly the length of a football field at 287 feet, the
tower will be 389 feet tall when completed and will
be used to cool hot water flowing from the plant’s
700,000-kilowatt, first generator. The hot water will
rise inside a large pipe in the middle of the tower to
a height of 40 feet, then spill out and tumble back to
the bottom through baffles totaling 9.5-million square
feet in surface area. Two towers are planned. Their
use will prevent thermal effects on the Etowah River.
