Roslyn James
Dies After
Heart Surgery
Mr. David Roslyn James, 22, of
Jackson, died about two o’clock
F.iday morning at St. Joseph’s
Hospital in Atlanta after having
undergone open heart surgery a
few days earlier.
A native of Butts County, Mr.
James was the son of Mrs. Lila
Strawn James and the late Mr.
Wallace J. James. He was a grad
uate of Jackson High School and
was employed at Cowan’s Super
Market.
Funeral services were held Sat
urday afternoon at three o’clock
from the Pepperton Baptist
Church with the Rev. Marion
Mayo, pastor, and the Rev. James
Burleson, a former pastor, offi
ciating. Interment was in the
Pepperton Cemetery with Haisten
Funeral Home in charge of ar
rangements.
Mr. James is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Rose Marie Cantrell
James; his mother, Mrs. Lila
Strawn James, both of Jackson;
two sisters, Mrs. Ray Kinard and
Mrs. Dean Walker, both of Jack
son; eight brothers, Edwin James,
Lamar James, Randall James, W.
A. James, Victor James, all of
Jackson; Marvin James of Grif
fin; Jackie James and Aubrey
James, both of Covington.
Pallbearers were A. G. Cowan,
Jimmy Long, Terry Weaver,
Jackie Norsworthy, Ben Barnes,
Gerald Cleveland.

at North Georgia College, will
spend the Christmas holidays with
his mother, Mrs. J. 0. Beau
champ.
Robert Burpee of Georgia Tech
is expected to spend the Yule
season with Mr. and Mrs. R. F.
Burpee.
Mike Browning, student at
Middle Georgia College, will
spend the Yule season with rel
atives and friends in Jackson.

Heart Attack
Claims Life of
Fleet Duffey
Mr. James Fleetwood Duffey,
58, of Forsyth, died Friday morn
ing of an apparent heart attack
while on the job as foreman of
the maintenance crew of the
State Highway Department for
Monroe County.
Mr. Duffey, a former widely
known resident of Butts County,
was born in Jasper County on No
vember 2, 1911, the son of the
late Mr. James W. Duffey and
Mrs. Janie Mae Goodman Duffey.
He was a long time employee of
the State Highway Department
and lived in Jackson for many
years before moving to Forsyth.
Funeral services were held
Sunday afternoon at two o’clock
from Haisten Chapel with Rev.
T. J. Thaxton and Rev. Francis
Ford, pastor of the Jenkinsburg
charge, officiating. Interment was
in Flovilla Cemetery with Hais
ten Funeral Home in charge of
arrangements.
Mr. Duffey is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Willie Ruth Hardy
Duffey of Forsyth; one daughter,
Mrs. Nancy Ruth Third of Atlan
ta; two sons, David Lee Duffey
and William Michael Duffey, both
of Forsyth; four sisters, Mrs.
Leola Campbell of Madison, Mrs.
Hazel Washington of Jackson,
Mrs. Margie Rutledge of Atlanta
and Mrs. Nellie Guthery of Hunts
ville, Alabama; four brothers.
Oscar Duffey of Lawrenceville,
Nevin Duffey of Jackson, Harvey
Duffey of Macon and Paul Duf
fey of Eatonton; stepmother,
Mrs. Lottie Harold Duffey of
Jackson; six grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Roy Prosser,
Otis Stephens, Bobby Stephens,
Letson Britton, Russell Price, Dr.
B. F. Parrish, George Washing
ton, Alva Ledford.
Honorary pallbearers were La
mar Moore, Neal Bonds, W. C.
Johnson, Paul Smith, Homer Car

partment employees.

Aubrey W. James received
$150.00 as a superior perform
ance award at Warner Robins
Air Force Base.

Harry Moore, 49, son of Mr.
Walter Moore and the late Mrs.
Lulabelle Dupree Moore, died at
Lawson General Hospital after
an illness of several months.
There were 1,200 voters in the
county to register under new
law. Last year 3,728 voters were
on the list. It has cost more than
$1 per capita to register these
voters according to W. H. Wilson,
Clerk, County Commissioners.

Mr. A. H. Pope, 81, of the Cork
Community, was in town Satur
day, December 2, strutting like
a peacock over the fact that rural
electrification came to his home
that morning.
T. J. Waldrop, 81, one of the
county’s best known citizens,
died at his home near Cork Wed
nesday.
Rev. J. C. Calloway will be the
pastor of the Jackson Methodist
Church and Rev. A. E. Barton,
pastor here for three years, was
assigned to Buford.
Rev. E. L. Daniel, pastor of
the Jackson Presbyterian Church,
is leaving his work as pastor of
the Jackson, Fellowship and
Bethany Church to accept a
call as pastor of the Cairo
Church.

observed her 88th birthday at her
home at Jenkinsburg December

Dr. James E. Woods was pain
fully injured in an accident when
the car which he was driving col
lided with a truck at the inter
section of Third and Benton
Streets.

Dr. S. R. England died on Sat
urday, the 16th of November. He
was attending the North Georgia
Conference in which he had
served for 45 years. He served
the Jackson Methodist Church
from 1917-1920.

Promotion
FORT BENNING, GEORGIA—
Private Stephen E. Smith, 21, has
been promoted to grade E-2 on
graduation from basic combat
training. Private Smith was as
signed to Company C, Bth Bat
talion, 2nd Brigade, United States
Army Training Center, Infantry.
The promotion was awarded
two months earlier than usual,
under an Army policy providing
incentive for outstanding train
ees. It was based on range firing
and physical combat proficiency
Mr. and Mrs. Joe J. Evans, of
Warrenton announce the birth of
a son, November 21, who has
been named Walter Theodore.
Mrs. Evans was formerly Miss
Polly Smith, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. T. W. Moore of Jenk
insburg.
Mrs. W. B. Dozier, 73, died at
her home in Flovilla early Tues
day night, November 26th. She
was one of Butts County’s most
prominent and widely beloved
women.

Park Senior High School, Private
Smith is the son of Mrs. Media
Sue Brinkley of Route 2, Jackson,
Ga.
His wife, Cheryl, is the daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Rogers of 6616 King George Way,
Morrow, Ga.
