Need Not Apply
For New Increase
Social Security beneficiaries
need not apply for the 15 percent
benefit increase just signed into
law by President Nixon. “Every
one of the 25 million men, wom
en and children now on the
benefit rolls will receive the in
crease automatically,” Robert M.
Ball, Commissioner of Social Se
curity, said today.
“The first regular check in the
new amount,” Commissioner Ball
said, “will arrive April 3, the
usual day for delivery of benefit
checks covering payments for
the month of March.” A separate
check in the amount of the bene
fit increase for the months of
January and February will reach
beneficiaries later in April, prob
ably during the week of April
20.
Refiguring the benefit amounts
of the 25 million men, women,
and children now on the bene
fit rolls is a tremendous task,
Commissioner Ball pointed out,
and it must be done without dis
rupting the regular benefit pay
ment cycle.
About one out of every eight
Americans is now receiving a so
cial security check each month,
Commissioner Ball said. As of the
end of December, these monthly
payments totaled $2.2 billion and
the monthly total will go up by
$345 million to more than $2.5
billion as the 15 percent benefit
increase becomes effective.
The average retirement bene
fit of SIOO a month will rise to
sll6 per month; a couple 65 or
older receiving the average
couple’s benefit of $l7O, will
have their benefit increased to
$196; the average benefit for a
family made up of a disabled
worker, wife and one or more
children will go up from $237 to
$273; and average payments for
a widow and two or more children
will rise from $254 to $292.”

Set For Macon
Jan. 29-Feb. 1
Macon, Ga.—Mr. Charlie
Wood, President of the newly
formed Middle Georgia Marine
Trade Association, announces that
Ed Conrad, known in the indus
try as “Mr. Boatshow,” will pro
duce the first Macon Boat and
Camping Show at the Coliseum
on January 29, 30, 31 and Feb

The show will display nearly
a half million dollars in the lat

ufacturers of marine and camp
ing equipment, plus recreational
vehicles, will be represented
through Middle Georgia dealers.
Mr. Conrad, who has success
fully produced boating and camp
ing shows in Atlanta for eight
years, says that the Macon, Geor
gia area will now be considered
another important stop on the
major boat and camping show
circuit.
Lake Sinclair, closest major
waterway to Macon, is one of the
more important reservoirs in
Georgia, adding much to the
economy of this part of the state.
Over $70,000,000 (correct)
was spent in Georgia last year
for new and used boats, plus
motors, accessories, servicing,
docking fees, storage, repairs,
fuel, club memberships and re
lated items.
Since 1960 there has been a
400% increase in boating regis
tration in the state, according to
the Georgia Game and Fish Com
mission. There are over 100,000
boats registered with 10 h. p. or
more. In addition, there are many
thousands of sailboats and craft
with motor of less than 10 h. p.
not requiring registration.
Fishing, which goes hand in
hand with boating and camping,
is also an important revenue
producer in Georgia, with over
500,000 licenses issued each year.

Our hard hats are soft-hearted.
Behind electric power beats the heart of the
Georgia Power Company ... its people. J. C.
Adams, a recently retired lineman, is one of
them. A champion blood donor, he’s given 112
pints of life-sustaining blood to the Red Cross.
And that’s only part of the some 32,500 pints
our donors have given in the past 19 years.
Our company’s lifeline doesn’t stop there. It
goes on to other service organizations: Easter
Seal, United Appeal, Community Chest, Salvation
Army Christmas dolls. And youth programs such
as 4-H, FHA, FFA, Junior Achievement, Girl
and Boy Scouts, Youth Conference on the Atom,
music and journalism scholarships.
The generators in our powerhouses supply
electricity. But the real dynamos, like Mr. Adams,
are vitally involved in life.
