den Club at the February meet
ing: Tuesday voted to donate
$500.00 for the proposed Hill-
Burton Hospital here toward the
construction of a room.
The Jackson - Butts County
Planning Commission met with
the mayor and council Monday
night and reviewed a proposed
land-subdivision regulation ordi
nance which, if enacted, could
well lead Jackson to its greatest
era of home building.
Mr. James Lon Gray, 74, wide
ly known retired farmer of Route
2, Jackson, died late Wednesday
afternoon at Georgia Baptist
Hospital following an extended
period of poor health.
Judge J. Hall Turner, Justice
of the Peace for Jackson district
for many years, will resign his
office effective February 29th
with his successor to be named
in a special election called by
Richard W. Watkins, Jr., Butts
Ordinary, on Saturday, February
27th.
Mrs. Maude Edward Mays,
widow of the late Ur. R. W. Mays,
one of Butts County’s most wide
ly known women, died at 12:25
a. m. Tuesday morning at the
Newton County Hospital follow
ing a long period of declining
health, aggravated by a broken
leg suffered in a fall some months
ago.

Robert V. Smith of Flovilla,
the beloved “Cap’n” of the old
Flovilla-Indian Springs Railroad,
is one of the few citizens here
to remember Sherman’s march
through Butts (bounty in Novem
ber, 1864. Mr. Smith, who will
be 89 on March 15, was a small
lad when Sherman’s blue-clad
legions passed though Butts Coun
ty in late autumn of 1864 in a
historical march from Atlanta to
Savannah.
Mrs. Ethel Ham, health nurse
for Butts County, reports that
there is one case of typhoid in
the city. A colored woman has
been critically ill but is im
proving at Macon Hospital where
the case has been positively iden
tified as typhoid.
Milner defeated the Jackson
girls 32-23 Wednesday night in
the sub-district finals in Jack
son. Milner will meet Manchester
in the district finals in Forest
Park Friday night.
Mrs. N. A. Powell entertained
at five tables of bridge and ca
nasta Saturday afternoon in com
pliment to Mrs. Charles Brown
lee, a recent charming bride.

In the death of Franklin Mel
vin Thornton, 92 years of age,
Butts County lost one of its two
surviving Conferedate veterans.
Mr. Thornton died Tuesday after
noon after an illness of several
weeks. The only other Confed
erate veteran in Butts County is
Mr. J. S. Gregory at Indian
Springs.

lanta Weather Bureau show Jan
uary was the coldest month in
the Atlanta area since weather
records have been kept. The aver
age for the month was approxi
mately 29.5 degrees with freez
ing temperatures every one of
the 31 days in the month with
the recent snow the heaviest ever
recorded in this section.

George F. Gilmore and David
Gray received painful but not
serious lacerations about the face
and head when the car in which
they were returning to Jackson
skidded on the ice and hit a truck
on the Indian Springs Highway
Friday night.

Miss Lucile Akin has been
appointed to write a history of
Butts County with the recommen
dation that the history be com
pleted by 1933. The Grand Jury
for the February term recom
mended Miss Akin.
That Jackson is soon to have
a golf course seems assured from
interest and activity being shown
by a large number of citizens in
the community. The course will
be built on the Mays land about
halfway between Jackson and In
dian Springs. Officers of the
new club include W. M. Redman,
president; P. H. Weaver, secre
tary. Members of the grounds
committee include J. O. Cole, J.
H. Rooks and C. D. Horton. Di
rectors names are M. R. Cope
land, l)r. 0. B. Howell, J. C. New
ton, C. W. Barnes and T. B.

Larry Gridley, of Griffin, di
rector of the Mclntosh Trail Area
Planning and Development Com
mission, spoke to the Jackson Ex
change Club Tuesday night and
urged the city and county to move
forward immediately with an ade
quate zoning plan that can be rig
idly enforced.
He noted the importance of zo
ning as cities and counties begin
to grow and expand and observed
that “unless you have a workable
plan, zoning is worthless.” He
pledged the assistance of Mcln
tosh Trail APDC in assisting the
city and county governments in
obtaining federal and state funds
in programs in the fields of zon
ing, law enforcement, recreation,
natural resources, pollution con
trol, etc.
Mr. Gridley said the decision
on the airport is evidently in the
hands of the FAA and stated that
he would rather see the present
airport enlarged than the second
airport go north of Atlanta.
Mr. Gridley was introduced by
Marion Todd, program chairman.

veterans and their widows was re
ceived Tuesday morning by Judge
J. H. Ham, Ordinary. The roll
shows 15 veterans and 34 widows
of veterans living in the county
at present.

The Devilettes traveled to the
West Georgia gym in Carrollton
Friday night to compete against
Valley Point in the region tour

The Devilettes started off as
the leaders and at the half were
leading by seven points. The sec
ond half proved to be the fatal
half for the Devilettes.
The Valley Point girls took the
lead in the fourth quarter and
were able to keep it. Carole Law
rence was high scorer with 18
points, Denise Davis followed
with 17 points, Inice Dennard 7,
and Dale Patrick 2. Andrea Hols
ton, Doris Greene, Patrice March
man played defense with Ellen
Pinckney as substitute. The game
was marred by many fouls.
Valley Point defeated Jackson
by a 55-44 score.

sect control on the plant. There
fore the chemical is poison to
animals and should not be fed
to them.
Recently a hog in New Mexico
was fed treated seed. The hog
died and was butchered and con
sumed by the family. The chil
dren had to be hospitalized.
USD A urged that these guide
lines be followed to prevent
treated seeds from being fed to
animals.
