Devotional
By REV. FRANCIS FORD
Pator, Jenkinsburg United
Methodist Charge
As we continue our meditations
on Prayer this month, let’s think
today on the idea that TO PRAY
IS TO CHANGE.
God is speaking in 2nd Chron.
7:14 where He tells the writer
“If my people . . . shall humble
themselves, and pray, and seek
my face, and turn from their
wicked ways; then will I hear
from Heaven, and will forgive
their sin, and will heal their
land.” As you read this passage
from the Bible, you can not help
but notice that God places a con
dition upon the effectiveness of
this prayer. That is, that the peo
ple must turn from their former
ways if they expect God to hear
their prayer and answer them.
In other words, God expects them
to change.
I wonder if this doesn’t give
us an insight to the question we
often ask about God’s answering
prayer? Maybe we are often
guilty of praying without ever
really meaning to change. But
God says that when we pray,
we must also change. Prayer is
a petition for renewal, but there
must be something new within
us. Something inside must change,
if we are to expect God to hear
and answer our prayer.
How many of us are too much
like the old Pharisee who went to
the temple and prayed, bragging
about himself and not really look
ing deep inside to see if he needed
change. You remember that this
Pharisee did not receive forgive
ness although he did go and pray.
Prayer without change is mean
ingless.
Andrew Gilles wrote a little
poem entitled “Two Prayers.” In
it he tells how a father listened
to his son’s prayer and realizing
his own frailties, knelt at the bed
side and prayed that God would
help him to change. Here’s the
poem:
Last night my little boy con
fessed to me some childish wrong;
and kneeling at my knee, he
prayed with tears, “Dear God,
make me a man like daddy, wise
and strong; 1 know you can.”
Then while he slept, l knelt be
side his bed, confessed my sins,
and prayed with low-bowed head,
“0 God, make me a child, like
my child here; pure, guiltless,
: after you see your voctor...

Jimmy weighs a full ten pounds only when he's
full of formula. But to his daddy, he's the weight of

for thinking:
What kind of man will Jimmy grow up to
