Hatcher Says
Region Offices
Badly Needed
Former Deputy Insurance Com
missioner A1 Hatcher, an an
nounced candidate for Comptrol
ler General, says, if elected, one
of his foremost objectives will be
the establishment of regional in
surance offices in the State of
Georgia.
Hatcher stated that when he
served as deputy insurance com
missioner in charge of the claims
division, statistics showed that the
telephone rang in his division of
government once every two and
one-half minutes and there were
some 2,200 requests for aid and
assistance every 20-day work
period.
“This number surely would in
crease many times over if local
state insurance offices were avail
able to the people in their own
community,” he stated.
“Regional offices in the state
would provide a much-needed
convenience, particularly for the
poor and elderly,” Hatcher added.
Hatcher, who resigned as
deputy insurance commissioner
in December to run for Comptrol
ler General, spoke at a dinner
meeting of the Butts County Jay
cees here Thursday at which
wives and out of town guests
were present.
“There should be at least two,
or possibly three, such regional
offices in South Georgia. There
should be two regional offices in
Middle Georgia, and three region
al offices in North Georgia,”
Hatcher concluded.

Fire Destroys
Negro House
Sunday Night
Fire of undetermined origin
fanned by cold northwest winds,
completely destroyed the house
occupied by John Shivers and
family just off the Griffin Road
Sunday night about 6:30 o’clock.
The pumper truck of the City
of Jackson Fire Department and
the Butts-Henry County Forestry
Unit truck answered the call but
when the pumper truck’s water
supply was exhausted the house
was doomed.
Jackson Fire Chief W. L. (Cot
ton) Vaughn said that the high
winds made fighting the fire
more difficult. Though the blaze
drew a large number of specta
tors most contents of the house
were lost. The house was located
on lands belonging to P. R. Kim
brough of Atlanta, according to
Chief Vaughn.
