Continuing our meditations on
Prayer, let’s talk today about
THE POWER OF PRAYER.
Paul tells us in Hebrews 4:16
“Let us therefore come boldly
unto the throne of grace, that
we may obtain mercy, and find
grace to help in time of need.”
1 love this passage of scripture
for it reminds me of two things
1 constantly need reminding of
in my own life. First is the chal
lenge to come in prayer boldly.
That is, that we do not come
timidly or doubting, but with con
fidence that God will hear our
prayer. Secondly, he reminds the
reader that through this experi
ence, help will be found. In other
words, as we come believing, we
experience the power of prayer
to change us.
Notice, however, that prayer
does not change anything around
us. We have a lot of wrong think
ing on this idea when we pray
for God to change things and we
see them remain as it. We figure
that God just doesn’t answer
prayer. Not so! Prayer does not
change THINGS. Prayer changes
PEOPLE and people change
things. You see, as we come to
God in prayer, truly seeking to
be changed ourselves, then the
power of prayer changes us and
gives us the power to change
things around us.
We often forget that the only
way God has of communicating
His will and love in a broken
world is through changed people.
People, who through the change
in their lives, no longer face
worldward, but Godward. The
power of prayer did not change
the direction of a single person.
The power of prayer changed the
person and then he was able to
take on anew direction; anew
dedication; anew consecration.
Our problem is being able to
come to God’s throne boldly as
Paul suggests, believing that the
power of prayer can give us
grace and help in every time of
need. Paul Gerhardt sensed this
weakness in man’s heart when he
wrote a poem challenging man to
throw his fear to the wind and
trust in God. Here’s his poem:
Give to the winds thy fears,
hope and be undismayed; God
hears thy sighs and counts thy
