Homemakers
Corner
BY PEGGY HOLLAND
County Extension Home
Economist
County homemakers have had to
contend with this situation. Here
are a few tips on repairing bro
ken window panes.
The first step often proves to
be the hardest—getting the bro
ken glass and the old putty out
of the frame. After that, it’s
just a matter of having the pro
per tools and a little skill.
If you are interested in learn
ing how to cut glass and make
window repairs, come by my of
fice in the Post Office and I
will give you a set of easy to
follow instructions. This is one
area in which homemakers can
save money on costly repair bills.
Windows That Stick
Here is a problem most home
makers would rather not have—
windows that stick. And with the
warmer days just around the
corner open windows will be
great for airing out the house.
What are the possible causes
and remedies? Consider these.
Excessive paint is a frequent
cause. Remove this with a scraper
or sandpaper.
Swelling due to moisture also
causes problems. Here you may
have to call a carpenter to refit
the window and allow more
clearance.
Need of lubrication may be
your window problem. Open the
window and rub paraffin or soap
on side grooves where window
slides.
You may also have a failure
of springs or weather seals. Raise
the window and examine the
spring. It may need to be reposi
tioned. Check the spring on a
window which is not giving
trouble to observe proper posi
tioning in a trouble-free window.
