By REV. FRANCIS FORD
Paitor, Jenkintburg United
Methodist Charge
This is my last column for
awhile, so let’s conclude our
meditations on Prayer ,by talking
about PUTTING PRAYER INTO
ACTION.
No prayer is of any real value
unless the person praying is ul
timately able to transform the
prayer into action in his life.
For as we have talked in previous
weeks about prayer changing
people and the power of prayer,
we realize that in the end, prayer
must be communicated in life
through the actions of the be
liever who is praying.
Jesus tells us in Mark 1 1 :25
“When you stand praying, for
give; if you have ought against
any: that your Father also
which is in Heaven may forgive
you your trespasses.” When Jesus
taught the Disciples the Lord’s
prayer, he told them to ask for
giveness AS THEY FORGAVE
others their trespasses. Here are
two statements of Jesus’ that
demand action upon the part of
the believer, if the believer is to
really be responsive to the de
mands that prayer brings.
I think that this is the biggest
problem most Christians have in
their prayer life. The spiritual
desire to change and the human
fraility of often being too weak
to be able to change and put
the change into action. We be
come creatures of habit and our
old habits often enslaves us. But
when we realize that God is try
ing to help us and will if we only
have the faith to put our faith
into action. This is something
that absolutely no one else can
do for us. We are the only ones
who can bring about action in
our own lives.
We go to a movie or turn on
the television and sit back letting
someone else entertain us. We
buy a ticket on a bus or plane
and let someone else do the driv
ing for us. But only we ourselves
can execute change into action in
our own lives. We can’t turn a
knob or buy a ticket and have
someone else do it for us.
Although many of you have
read St. Francis’ prayer many
times, I would like to share it with
you, because it so beautifully il
lustrates prayer in action. Here
it is:
“Lord, make me an instrument

Mrs. Coleman
Buried Sunday
At Sandy Creek
Mrs. Mattie Davis Coleman, 93,
of Route 1, Flovilla, one of Butts
County’s oldest citizens, died at
noon Friday, March 20th, at
Westbury Medical Care Home in
Jenkinsburg. Mrs. Coleman had
been in declining health for a
number of years and had been a
patient at Westbury since No
vember 1968.
Prior to that time Mrs. Cole
man had made her home with
Mrs. Mae Coleman Higgins for
a long period of time.
Born July 30, 1876, Mrs. Cole
man, the former Miss Mattie Da
vis, was the daughter of Mr.
Parham Davis and Mrs. Matilda
Gibson Davis, both of Monroe
County. She had lived in Butts
County most of her life and was
a member of the Pleasant Grove
United Methodist Church in Mon
roe County. She was the widow
of Mr. Andrew Jackson Coleman.
Funeral services were held
Sunday afternoon at three o’clock
in the chapel of Haisten Funeral
Home in Jackson. The Rev. Andy
Holston, pastor of The Commu
nity Church, and Rev. Jimmy
Landrum, pastor of the Pleasant
Grove Congregational Methodist
Church, officiated. Interment was
in Sandy Creek Cemetery with
Haisten Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Coleman is survived by
two daughters, Mrs. Elsie Singley
and Mrs. Nannie Thomas, both
of Jackson; two sons, Stanley
Coleman of Jackson and Jack
Coleman of Wauchula, Florida; a
half-sister, Mrs. Ruby Martin of
of Thy peace. Where there is
hate, may I bring love; where
offense, may I bring pardon.
May I bring union in place of dis
cord; truth replacing error; faith
where once there was doubt.
Hope for dispair, light where once
was darkness, joy to replace sad
ness. Make me not to so crave
to be loved as to love. Help me
to learn that in giving I may
receive; in forgetting myself, I
may find life eternal.”
