ONCE A .UNKIE, always a junkie. The prospects are
slim. ■' a person is ever hooked on the so-called
'hard” drugs, that he will ever be free again. The
whole jargon of the drug scene is linked to the permanency
of drug addiction:
• A person is "hooked”, signifying permanent addiction;
• A “fix" is the terminology for a shot of heroin. The sig
nificance is that a person gets sick without dope and gets his
hurt "fixed" with it.
Psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, penologists,
jurists and other specialists are skeptical that a hooked
person will ever “get straight”, i.e. quit using drugs.
One man. who headed a federal institution aimed at reha
bilitation of drug addicts, said he feels the likelihood of a
cure is even less than 2 per cent.
"We treat them, and when their time is over, they go right
back into the same social situations they came from. The
pressures are the same. So are the temptations, frustrations,
opportunities and personality faults."
Would STRONGER drug laws help curb this deplorable
national shame?
