The newly formed Jackson
Theatre Guild, after much
dedicated work, is going into
the second month of operation.
The Jackson Theatre Guild is a
voluntary, non-profit organiza
tion formed to promote the
appreciation of the performing
arts. The Guild was originally
formed as a parents’ group, but
now wish to open their
membership to any interested
individuals.
The elected Board of
Directors consists of Hyrum
Pierce, Chairman; Willadean
Powell, Jo Ann Manley, Ruth
Ash, William Powell, Wilma
Bridges, Elizabeth Foster and
Ellen Brewer as Treasurer.
The next monthly meeting will
be held on Tuesday, November
6, 7:30 p.m. at the Van
Deventer Youth Center.
The formation of the Guild
was an outgrowth of the
Creative Dramatics classes
offered by Jim Ray James last
year. Some of their activities
included a tour of the Set
Production Studio at Chastain
Park, ending with a picnic. The
highlight of the season was the
appearance of several students
in the Theatre of the Stars
production of “Music Man” at
the Civic Center in Atlanta.
Another rewarding experience
for some of the Junior High
students was an invitation to
make three sessions of demon
strations before a State
Conference of Educators at the
University of Georgia. The
Educators’ reaction was a
mazement that so much had
been done in only one season’s
work and exhibited much
interest in forming a similar
program in their own locali
ties.
The Jackson Theatre Guild
has secured two excellent
instructors, Eleanor Harris,
whose specialty is dance, and
her assistant, Sheila Ray, for
Creative Dramatics. Classes
are being offered for ages three
through high school. Although
classes are presently under
way some openings are avail
able in most age groups and
applications will be accepted
during the next few days.
For further information call
one of the Board Members or
the Van Deventer Youth
Center.
