Okefenokee Swamp Needs
Encroachment Protection
The Okefenokee Swamp is
world-famous as one of the
largest and mo6t primitive
swamps in America. However,
the Okefenokee’s unique edu
cational, scientific, and recrea
tional value currently lack
protection from encroachment.
The Okefenokee lies at the
confluence of most of the
Interstate Highways that bring
the nation’s tourist traffic into
Florida. These routes include
1-95 from the northeast, 1-75
from the north and central
states, 1-10 from the southwest
and the proposed limited
access from the midwest.
Undoubtedly, the increasing
tourist traffic wHll generate
additional pressures on the
integrity of the Swamp.
Congressmen Bill Stuckey
(Bth District, Ga.) and Bo Ginn
(Ist District, Ga.) in whose
districts the Swamp lies, have
recently introduced legislation
(House Bill 6395) that would
provide the additional protec
tion offered by wilderness
designation. Their bill would
designate about 343,850 acres
of the Okefenokee National
Wildlife Refuge as the Okefeno
kee Wilderness. Excluded from
the designated area would be
some high-ground lands cur
rently managed for timber
production and the major
access points to the Swamp-
Gamp Cornelia on the east,
Okefenokee Swamp in the
north, and Stephen C. Foster
State Park on the west.
The bill spells out the
requirements that “ ... sub
ject to such restrictions as the
Secretary of the Interior deems
necessary for public safety and
toprotectflora and fauna of the

will be provided from the

Foster State Park, King’s

It is important to note that
public use of the Swamp will
not be affected by wilderness
status. Present uses, including
fishing, canoeing, wilderness
camping, wildlife observation
and photography, will continue
subject to the regulatory
authority of the State of
Georgia and the Bureau of
Sports Fisheries and Wildlife.
Trail maintainanceand Refuge
management will continue
under the provisions of the
Wilderness Act.
The Okefenokee Wilderness
can only be designated by an
act of Congress. Before voting
on such legislation, the
proposal must pass through
both House and Senate Sub
committees of Public Lands
and then through the full
Committee Interior and Insu
lar Affairs and finally through
the floor debate and vote by
both House and Senate.
The Stuckey-Ginn bill is still
at the first step-in the
Subcommittee for Public
Lands. The senate does not
have a bill to consider. For

YOU DESERVE IT!
Everyone agrees that if you have your
health you are a very lucky person. But, how
many of you are planning so that you better
your chances of staying healthy? The most
Important single factor to consider is having
a physical check-up on an annual basis.
The best way io avoid future problems is
to catch them before they are so apparent that
they are already troublesome. If you want to
