CONQUEST OF CANCER
9
We thank Thee, Eternal God, for
Thy love and compassion toward us.
Bless this day, we pray Thee, all who suffer from
The scourge of cancer and all who love and care
For them.
May those who minister to them in the healing arts
Be instruments of Thy will to bring health, hope
And life.
, For each we ask grace to endure,
Strength to serve, and a demonstration of Thy power to heal.
For those who are engaged in research and study on cancer
We ask illumination from Thee that cure and prevention of
This disease may soon be found.
Crown with success, we pray, the work of the
Dedicated volunteers and staff of the American Cancer Society
, Who labor diligently to raise funds to support
Service to cancer patients, health education, and research.
May we exercise common sense by protecting
Ourselves and our loved ones through regular
Medical examinations.
May we be preserved through the ministries of healing and
Thine own power for further service to Thee.
Help us to be part of the answer to this prayer we
Make... through our giving of the money and
The time with which Thou hast blessed us.
Amen

"A CALL FOR THANKS”
For the past few weeks, we
have been looking at some of
the United Methodist direc
tions in church growth which
challenge Christians of all
denominations. My denomina
tion has in its Articles of
Religion the recognition of the
sovereignty and importance of
the United States. In our
challenge to recover the proper
place of our founding prin
ciples, one of the most
important is our attitude of
thanks for the blessings and
responsibilities of our great -
though highly imperfect -
homeland.
Thanksgiving is a time and
an attitude. The Psalmist
wrote. “Bless the Lord, O my
soul, and forget not all His
benefits.” He is telling us not to
take life and its blessings for
granted.
The remedy for much of our
restless dissatisfaction today is
learning to be thankful. We
should count our blessings and
name them one by one, as the
hymn puts it. Possessing a
thankful heart breaks through
our blue moods like the sun
scatters the clouds.
Recall how difficult life was
for the original settlers of our
land. The Mayflower carried
102 passengers, half of whom
died the first winter of
undernourishment, disease, or
exposure. At one period there
were only seven healthy folks
left to nurse the sick. Those
Puritans laid their distresses
before God in fasting and
prayer. Such continual medita
tion on abstinence led them to
gloominess and discontent.
When things were especially
bleak, another fast was called,
but averted when a wise old

CARD OF THANKS
I wish to thank the entire
staff of Sylvan Grove Hospital,
the nurses, Dr. Howell, Dr.
Newman, and the sitters who
sat with me during my stay at
the hospital. Thanks also to all
those who remembered me
with visits, prayers, gifts, and
other kindnesses while in the
hospital and since returning
home. - Lynn Thaxton.
IN APPRECIATION
To our many friends and
relatives who have been so
wonderful to us since the
accident in which Andy was
critically injured, we simply
cannot find words to express
our sincere and grateful
appreciation. Your devotion
and concern, as well as your
visits, your many remem
brances, prayers, and other
expressions of love, have
endeared you to us and we
covet your continued prayers.
- Andy, Barbara and Russell,
and Russ Crumbley.
settler said they had brooded
over their misfortunes long
enough, and that it seemed
high time they should remem
ber God’s mercies to them.
He continued in the now
famous direction of our
Thanksgiving season. He rea
soned that after all, in spite of
trouble, they enjoyed happy
homes, growing strength, and
civil and religious liberty. He
proposed that instead of a fast
they should keep a feast. His
advice was taken, and from
that time Thanksgiving Day
has become an annual obser
vance in America.
Thanksgiving should be a
daily observance in our lives:
“Bless the Lord, 0 my soul,
and forget not all His benefits.”
Happy Thanksgiving to you
all!

center for Spalding and
surrounding counties on Thurs

to department officials.
Division of Youth Services
Director Charles Ray will
present an intensive study to
Judge Andrew Whalen Thurs
day afternoon showing the
need for a regional center for
this area.
‘The study is looking for a 12
county area to be served by
such a center,” Ray said.
He named Spalding, Butts,
Newton, Henry, Lamar, Up
son, Pike, Fayette, Meri
wether, Coweta, Troup, Heard
and Carroll counties as the
counties to be served by the
juvenile facility.

Ray said the report would not
indicate which county should
serve as the site for the center.
Department of Human Re

such a facility would co6t

All cost for a regional

Ray indicated since the

Brown said he will fight to
see that the regional center is
located in Griffin.
He added reports that $1
million was available for
detention center construction
was false.
Human Resources Network
Director Ken Reynolds agreed
that there is no present funding

Brown said securing funding
