Is Butts Soil
Conservationist
Shorty Garrison, District
Conservationist with the Soil
Conservation Service, an
nouces the appointment of
Harold “Doc” McMichael as
resident Soil Conservationist
for Butts County. Mr. McMic
hael replaced James Barron,
Jr. who was transferred to the
Griffin office.
Mr. McMichael is a Butts
County boy, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. J. M. McMichael of the
Stark Community.
Harold graduated from Butts
County high school in 1959. He
attended West Georgia College
and served 6 months active
duty in the U. S. Army and 5%
years with the National Guard.
Harold began his career with
the staff of the Georgia
Experiment Station in Griffin.
He was lab technician for the
Soils Lab for 4% years.
In 1964 he began work with
the Soil Conservation Service
as Conservation Aide in Pike
County. He was transferred to
Barnesville in 1970 where he
worked until the present time.
Harold is married to the
former Dorothy Strawn. They
have one boy, 4% years of age.
Harold is a member of the
Stark Methodist Church. He is
very active in local Little
League work and has been for
the past ten years.
Harold received the honor of
>ei ng named “Young Man of
he Year” in Butts County for
1972.
Garrison stated that he was
very pleased to be able to place
a young man of McMichael’s
ability in the Butts County
office.
Mrs. Watkins
Judge in
Beautification
Mrs. Elizabeth H. Watkins,
Member Services Director of
the Central Georgia Electric
Membership Corporation, was
signally honored by being one
of the three persons chosen to
serve as judges for the
Beautification Through Con
servation Awards Program.
The announcement of Mrs.
Watkins ’ acceptance was made
by R. W. Oertel, Assistant
State Conservationist with the
United States Department of
Agriculture, Soil Conservation
Service, Athens.
Others chosen as judges
were James D. Landrum,
president, the Georgia Conser
vancy, Atlanta, and Randy
Williams, Community Devel
opment Specialist, Agricul
tural Extension Service, Uni
versity of Georgia, Athens.
On November 12th the judges
visited Clayton, in Rabun
County; on November 13th
they moved to Calhoun in
Gordon County; and on
November 15th they visited Ft.
Valley in Peach County and on
November 16th Statesboro in
Bulloch County.
In his letter to Mrs. Watkins
Mr. Oertel said “your profes
sional background will bring to
the judging team a wide range
of experience and sensitive
ness to conservation concerns.
I’m looking forward to spend
ing next week with you on this
assignment.”

as their guests Sunday Mrs.
Allen’s granddaughter and
family, Mr. and Mrs. S. Elrod,
from College Park. Also
visiting were Mr. Waits and
Mrs. Wright from the Jackson
United Methodist Church and
Rev. and Mrs. E. D. Car lock of
Indian Springs Camp Ground.
Mr. Allen’s condition is about
the same.
Mr.and Mrs. W. L. Holloway
spent Saturday night and
Sunday with their daughter
and family, Dr. and Mrs. C. A.
Batchelor, Holly and Cal, in
Bremen. Saturday is Cal’s
birthday and we want to wish
you a Happy One, Cal.
Mrs. B. T. McMichael had as
her weekend guests her
daughter and granddaughter,
Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Goetz, and
Meta from Warner Robins. On
Sunday her guests were her
daughter and family, Mr. and
Mrs. Cecil Brown of Macon,
another daughter and grand
daughter, Mrs. Jimmy Kinard,
and Susan from Oxford and
Mrs. Frank Ogle tree from
Cork.
Mrs. B. T. McMichael and
daughter, Mrs. Margaret
Greer will spend Thanksgiving
holidays with Mrs. McMic
hael’s granddaughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Jimmy Walker, in
Atlanta.
Mr. and Mrs. Asa Maddox
drove to Griffin Sunday
afternoon to meet an associate
of Mr. Maddox’s, Mr. Lynwood
Cooper, from Lewiston, N. C.
who will spend several days
with them.
Mr. and Mrs. John W. Webb
attended the Homecoming of
their former church in Atlanta,
Inman Park United Methodist
Church, and also visited with
Miss Emma Kelly who
accompanied them to the
Homecoming. All came home
telling about the feast they
enjoyed, not only food but
Spiritual food.
Miss Blannie Stallworth and
hersister, Mrs. E. H. Wise, Jr.,
had as their guests Sunday
Mrs. Farrell Chapman, from
Highlands, N. C. and Mrs.
Brooks Bryans and Miss Clyo
Bryans of Dublin.

Thanks to you, our customers and friends, we take
pleasure in announcing that our Grand Opening of our
store Saturday was a huge success. It was made possible
by your expressions of good will, your sentiments of best
wishes, and your valued patronage which we have enjoyed
and appreciated so much over the years.
We especially appreciate the lovely flowers sent by
friends upon the occasion of our opening.
I would especially like to thank my father, Otis
P. Stephens, former owner of this store, for his many acts
of kindness, including financial assistance, in enabling us to
reach the high plateau of our Grand Opening Saturday. His
many favors and goodness to us will never be forgotten.
We thank our employees, W. Lamar McMichael,
Mgr., Richard Brooks, Wynnell McMichael, Randy Hamlin,
Wiley Crowder, and Lester Jenkins, for their dedication
and loyalty in making the opening possible and the success
it was. Not only did Saturday mark our Grand Opening but
it was our 27th Anniversary in the grocery business. For
your support and patronage over the years we are indebted.

Mrs. Dan Hoard spent
Wednesday in Forest Park
with her son, Ed, while he was
attending concerts in Atlanta.
Mr. and Mrs. Danny Hoard
have Mrs. Hoard’s sister, Mrs.
Neil Mullis, and Nickels for the
Thanksgiving holidays. Mrs.
Hoard kept Nickels last week
while Mr. and Mrs. Neil Mullis
were in Savannah attending a
convention.

planned. Miss Simons is a
native of Tallahassee, Florida,
and is a journalism graduate of
