Circus
Coming
To Town
Not one, but two perform
ing elephant acts will be seen
when the big Lewis Bros.
Circus comes to Jackson on
Friday, April 12th.
Today, elephants are found
in their native habitat in only
two sections of the world, in
India and Africa. Indian
elephants are used for circi"
performances because they
are much more intelligent
than the African variety,
says Bobby Gibbs, head
elephant trainer with Lewis
Bros. Circus. Gibbs refers to
all of his elephants as “bulls”
although they are all fe
males.
An elephant sleeps about
four hours and then is ready
for work the next twenty, and
if you watch a huge elephant
herd at night, you will find
that they never all lay down
to sleep at the same time, but
always leave one of their
number up and awake to
stand guard on the herd.
The food for one elephant
for one day consists of 200
pounds of hay, 50 to 100
gallons of water, bran, oats,
ten pounds of salt, twenty
loaves of bread, and often
fruit or a juicy watermelon
for desert.
In addition to the allure
ment of the famous Lewis
Bros, television elephants,
the great Lewis Bros. Circus
will present a full and
complete circus perform
ance with outstanding inter
national stars from around
the world. Sudan camel
fantasy, trained midget
mules from Monterrey, Mad
emoiselle Souren lovely
French trapeze thriller,
Zerbini Troupe acrobatic
aces of Europe, Senorita
Rosa Mexico’s matchless
aerial star who swings high
in the circus tent hanging
only by her teeth. Miss Anna
beautiful and graceful
bareback riding, Gary Henry
and his congress of clowns;
all of this and much more will
be a part of the Lewis Bros,
performance under an au
thenic old time circus tent.
Yes, it is time to live again
the joys of yesteryear. Circus
day comes but once a year,

Diabetes Detection Center

The Butts County Health
Department and the 4-H
Clubs of Butts County are

ing clinic Thursday, April
25th. The times are 1:30 - 5:00
p.m. and 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. The

Persons who go to diabetic

questions about diabetes.
Here are some of the most
frequent questions, with the
answers.
Car Can Be Moved After
Accident New Law States
Expressway traffic delays
due to minor accidents
should significantly be re
duced when anew Georgia
law requiring motorists to
move their damaged vehi
cles out of traffic lanes
becomes effective on July 1.
“After July 1, it will not be
necessary for long lines of
congestion to develop follow
ing a great majority of
accidents which occur on our
metro expressways,” Archie
Burnham, State Department
of Transportation Traffic and
Safety Engineer said at a
recent news conference in
Atlanta.
“This moving of damaged
vehicles from the lines of
traffic can do more to cut
travel delays, particularly in
peak hour traffic, than any
other single action that could
be taken on expressways in
metropolitan areas,” he
continued.
Burnham along with Maj.
C. C. Hamby, head of the
Traffic Division of the
Atlanta Police Department
and Maj. Hugh Harding of
the Georgia Department of
Public Safety, answered
newmen's questions concern
ing the legal technicalities of
the law.
Last week. Gov. Jimmy
Carter signed House bill 1801
into law- making it manda
tory for drivers involved in
“fender bender” type acci
dents on a four-lane divided
highway in seven metro
areas in Georgia to move
their vehicles to the roadside
before investigators arrive.
"Moving the vehicle will
have no effect regarding the
cause of the accident and will
enable the traffic stream to
be cleared of an obstruc
tion." Burnham emphasized.
The law will effect only
those metropolitan counties
surrounding Albany, Atlanta.
Chattanooga. Columbus.
Macon and Savannah.
“If a car is driveable, then
move it.” Maj. Hamby said.
“This in police lingo, is a
fender bender.”
ask the sponsors to pledge at

Walkers can have several
sponsors and sponsors can
have several walkers ac
cording to Hudgins. It is
reported that one student at
Jackson High already has 40

more. One adult lady already
has 40 sponsors and is
expected to have double that

Adults are encouraged to

What is Diabetes?
It is a chronic condition in
which the body has lost all or
some of its ability to use
sugar and starches as energy
sources. Since insulin regu
lates this ability, this means
the body lacks enough of this
harmone.
Who gets diabetes?
Anyone can. Children have
the most severe type,
juvenile diabetes. Adults
become more likely to
develop diabetes as they get
older, but adult onset
diabetes is less severe than
There are three primary
conditions when the vehicles
must be removed from a four
lane divided highway: when
it can be done safely; when
the vehicle can be normally
and safely driven, and when
it can be moved under its own
power.
By moving the cars under
the conditions prescribed by
law, traffic will be allowed to
flow and investigating of
ficers can arrive more
quickly. Also, “by pulling
over to the side of the road,
you possibly will save your
own life.” Maj. Harding
emphasized.
When asked what would
happen to a motorist who
refused to move his car. both
Harding and Hamby agreed
that, while a specific penalty
wasn’t written into the law,
the delinquent driver would
be subject to a citation under
existing traffic laws.
This law doesn’t abrogate
the driver's responsibility to
file a written report as now
required and to remain near
the scene until investigators
arrive.
Harding emphasized that a
good investigator would be
able to tell by the damage
how the accident occurred
without the vehicles being in
their original positions. .Asa
result, the vehicles can be
moved to a safer haven off
the roadway.

the most likely candidate for
diabetes is a woman between

Can diabetes be inherited?
Yes, that's the way some
diabetes develops. But its
inheritance is not as simple
as for blue eyes. And
diabetes is not always
inherited, sometimes it de
