Everyone knows the price
of electricity -and almost
everything else - is going up.
But when you compare the
benefits of electricity with
other familiar costs of living
such as food, clothing,
gasoline and others, the real
value of electricity still leads
the field.
Having electricity in your
home is roughly equivalent to
having eight personal ser
vants. In the average
Georgia home, these ser
vants work for a collective
salary of about s2l a month
or 70 cents a day. While many
Georgians pay more than the
average, they still continue
to get an outstanding value
for their money. Further
more, these electrical ser
vants are on call 24 hours a
day, seven days a week.
Electricity is so conven
ient, few consumers think of
the wide variety of uses they
make of it in the course of a
day. When used carefully and
wisely, electricity saves
time, effort and often money,
as compared to alternative
methods of performing the
same tasks.
While most consumers will
quickly admit that modern
efectric ranges and refrig
erators are a great improve
ment over the wood-burning
stoves and ice boxes of the
19th century, some think of
more modern appliances
such as dishwashers or
electric skillets or features
such as automatic defrosters
or self-cleaning ovens are
unnecessary energy wasters.
Acutally, it is possible to use
electricity to save energy
and money.
The self-cleaning feature
on an electric oven will
operate for less than sixteen
cents and save the hard work
and the cost of cleaner
needed to clean an oven
manually. The energy used
to clean the oven was
probably no more than the
energy used to produce and
market a package of oven
cleaner. Also, self-cleaning
ovens are better insulated
than conventional ovens, so
they use less electricity as
they bake.
Automatically defrosting
refrigerators and freezers
use more energy than the
ones that must be defrosted
manually. The automatic
defrost feature, however,
may still be a benefit to
consumers who don’t have
time to keep these appliances
properly defrosted. Frost
acts as an insulator, so when
ice is more than V 4 inch thick
the unit loses efficiency. It
uses more power and
provides less cooling ca
pacity than it would if it
were kept frost-free.
Is a dishwasher just an
energy wasting luxury? Not
at all. It not only saves the
homemaker time and effort,
but, if run with full load, it
uses less hot water than hand
washing three times a day
would require. Every drop of
hot water wasted is money
and energy down the drain.
Dishwashers also sanitize
dishes better than hand
wash. This minimizes the
possibility of germs being
spread from one fan ily
member to another.
Small kitchen appliances
can be energy savers, too.
Coffee makers, toasters,
waffle irons, and egg cookers
use less electricity than
would be needed to cook the
same foods with the range.
Electricity has made pos
sible an inexpensive, varied
and readily available form of
entertainment: television. A
family can watch a play or
movie without leaving the
living room and without
having to pay for gasoline,
parking or admission.

A Picnic Idea That Works
Celebrate the Labor Day Weekend with a family
barbecue. The charcoal chef can be an instant
hero. Asingle layer of briquetts will take a
minimum of 30 minutes to heat through. They're
ready when they turn an ash-grey color. An ad
justable grill will help you control the heat for
just the right intensity.
Prevent sticking by brushing the grill with a lit
tle vegetable oil mixed with a seasoning of vour
choice.
Steaks are excellent for grilling when cut 3 4 to 1
inch thick or more. Round, chuck, and flank
steaks should be tenderized before grilling for
best results.
Chickens halved or quartered are excellent on
the grill. Baste them with a little lemon butter to
keep them moist and tender while cooking.
Seafood is delicious charcoal-grilled. Baste often
to keep moist.
