Ground School in Soaring
Non-Credit Course Gordon
BARNESVILLE A
ground school in soaring will
be offered as a non-credit
course this September by the
Office of Community Ser
vices at Gordon Junior
College.
The nine-week course will
meet every Monday from 7
until 10 p.m. beginning Sept.
8 on the Gordon campus.
Orville Chapin, owner of
Jonathan’s Roost, a sailport
in Williamson, Ga„ will be
the class instructor. Course
content will prepare students
to take the Federal Aviation
Administration examination.
Sailplanes are structured
from lightweight fiberglass
and metal and do not have
engines. They are launched
with the help of a tow plane.
After reaching a designated
height the towline is released
and the sailplane soars
smoothly and quietly on air
currents. Glider power
comes from the launch and
the wind, and descent and
landing is controlled by
spoilers. Chapin said that
many pilots stay aloft for five
hours at a time and generally
fly at an altitude of 9,000 feet.
The art of soaring is
gaining popularity across the
United States and is controll
ed by the Federal Aviation
Administration. Both gliders
and pilots must meet FAA
standards. Licensing re
quires that students have
dual instruction, fly solo and
successfully complete a
written FAA test. Students
must be at least 14 years old.
Chapin, a former military
pilot, said that he currently
has 50 active students,
mainly from Atlanta, Macon,
and Columbus. Approxi
mately 300 people visit
Jonathan’s Roost regularly
to soar or watch from the
