Hoard per BAE Held First Meet Of Year The Butts County Associa tion of Educators (BAE) held their first meeting of the year last Wednesday at the Jackson High School lunch room. Loy Hutcheson, President of BAE, began the meeting by introducing the guests and recognizing the principals of each school who introduced new teachers. After a “get aquainted” game Mr. Hutch eson officially welcomed the groups of some 150 educa tors. He said “we are at a point where we as an organization have to do something - we have to get involved. Teacher Welfare is one of my top priorities as BAE president. We are a profession and have to operate as a professional association.” The Business meeting included a financial and budget report which was accepted by the group. It was pointed out that a committee was looking into several insurance programs and would report their findings and recommend the best program. Glen Newsome, Field Representative from GAE (Georgia Association of Educators) was the guest speaker. Mr. Newsome talk ed about the history of Georgia teachers fighting for cost of living raises and explained what G.A.E. was doing for the teachers of Georgia. He stated that again Educators is not the top priority among legislators. Mr. and Mrs. Danny Hoard and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Waits returned home Sunday after a week’s vacation at Daytona Beach, Fla. Mrs. Margaret Greer spent the weekend at her home here. Mr. and Mrs. Lance Caulder had as their guests for the weekend Mr. and Mrs. Dave Taylor of Raleigh, N. C. and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Caulder of Cary, N. C. Stacey and Clark Burge of Atlanta spent last week with Mr. and Mrs. Louis Taylor and family. Mrs. Lucille Johnson spent a few days last week with her son, Dr. and Mrs. Sidney Johnson, and children of Hazlehurst. Mr. and Mrs. Joel Crane had as their weekend guests Mr. and ‘Mrs. Jerry Crane and children of Warner Robins and Mrs. Jeanene Fitzgerald of Macon. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Holloway and Mrs. Lucille Johnson spent Sunday in Atlanta with Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Hughes. He also stressed the point that the teachers of Georgia must believe in the education profession and that they are a professional organization. Also on the program was Mr. Bill Jones, Butts County School Superintendent. Mr. Jones welcomed the school personnel back for the school year and stated that it looks like it will be a very good year. Everyone was served lunch prepared by Mrs. Catherine Fletcher and her lunchroom staff. PERSONAL Mr. and Mrs. Odell Cleveland and Mrs. T. W. Cleveland have just returned from a ten day tour of the Western States and New Mexico. Enroute they visited such places as Bellingrath Gardens, the LBJ Library and the LBJ Ranch. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. L. Comer and Mrs. Mary Mackin of Atlanta visited friends and relatives in Savannah over the weekend. Eddie Blackburn, of Alto, is at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Blackburn, having just been released from Emory Uni versity Hospital. He had major back surgery in July and will be confined on a wedge bed for about four months. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Luke of Greenville, S. C. were weekend guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dick O’Hara. Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Hurt and Mrs. Cecil Adams attended the Hurt reunion, August 31st in Cornelia. They reported an enjoyable time. Mr. and Mrs. R. K. O’Hara Sr., of Marietta, and Mrs. GaGa Battle of Augusta were Sunday afternoon guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dick O’Hara.
