■Three Arrests Made In
Armed Robbery Attempt
; Lee Maddox Grocery lo
cated on Georgia Highway
36, south of Jackson, was the
scene of an attempted armed
robbery Friday, December
19 around noon.
Wayne Maddox, son of Lee
Maddox, was sitting alone in
the store quietly reading a
magazine when two males
burst in through the front
door of the store and
demanded his money. One of
the intruders was carrying
what looked like a 22 caliber
pistol; the other had a knife.
Wayne was ordered to lie
down on the floor, but
remembering what happen
ed at Fresh Air Barbecue
several months ago (last
March Lamar James and
James Brewer were shot by
robbers while they laid face
down in front of the barbecue
stand) he refused.
As they emptied the
contents of the cash register
into a paper bag they
repeatedly told Wayne to lie
down. Finally, provoked by
his refusals, the man with the
knife moved toward Wayne.
Wayne reflexively dashed
through the back door of the
store.
The robbers chased after
him and apparently tripped
over a tool box located at the
door dropping the paper bag
filled with money.
Wayne ran for his house
behind the store and the

by.
Wayne phoned the Butts
County Sheriff’s Depart

and provided them a good
since winter is near the
worry of rabies might be
forgotten. It is true that
during the cold winter
months, the activity of
animals is slowed, said Mr.
Essich, but it definitely does
not stop. The spread of rabies
will continue through the
winter months and strict
precautions on the part of
animal owners should be
continued. Owners should
have their pets inoculated
against rabies and strict
precautions should be taken
to prevent their pets’
exposure to possible rabies
contamination.
