NEW YORK, Feb. 9 For
the average taxpayer living
in Butts County, what are the
chances of his Federal
income tax report getting a
thorough checkup this year?
To some extent, the luck of
the draw will decide. A
certain proportion of all
returns, taken at random,
will be scanned. Others,
because of arithmetical
errors or because some
entries seem to be out of line,
will be selected by the
Internal Revenue Service

concerns the relationship of
the itemized deductions
listed to the amount of
income reported. If the ratio
seems to be unusually high, a
more detailed check will be
made.
For Butts County taxpay
ers to know what is typical in
the matter of deducations
would be very helpful.
A study made by the
Commerce Clearing House,
authority on tax law, based
upon national data supplied
by the IRS, indicates just
how much the deductions
have amounted to in recent
years at each income level.
In general, it shows,
families throughout the
country with earnings equal
to the Butts County average,
have been listing deductions
of $2,730, or approximately 25
percent of their income.
Among those with lower
than average earnings, the
deductions taken usually
represent a relatively large
proportion of their earnings.

THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
On the other hand, those in
the higher brackets have
smaller deductions on a
percentage basis, although
the dollar amount is greater.
The figures show that while
local families at the SB,OOO to
$9,000 level will be having
deductions of $2,520, if they
conform with the average
elsewhere, those in the
SIO,OOO to $15,000 bracket will
be listing approximately
$2,920.
Of the $2,730 in deductions
generally taken by families
whose incomes equal the
Butts County average, $346 is
for contributions, $996 for
interest on loans, installment
debt and the like, $962 for
state and local taxes and $426
for medical and dental
outlays.
The Commerce Clearing
House cautions that the
deduction figures are merely
a guide to what most people
have been listing and that
proper records must be kept
to support all claims.
