Jackson and Butts County
shivered through the coldest
January day on record on
Sunday, January 30, when
the thermometer here drop
ped to four degrees below
zero and rose no higher than
15 degrees the same after
noon.
The City of Jackson has let
a contract of anew 30,000
gallon upright water tank, to
be located at the corner of
Lyons and Benton Streets.
Miss Dorothy Thomas, who
will again serve as chairman
of the Heart Fund drive, will
be assisted this year by Mrs.
Billy Leverette as co
chairman.
Deaths during the week:
John Wesley Barnes, 66;
Austin Andrew Mills, 64;
Mrs. C. B. Biles, Sr., 93.

A Butts Countian, Robert
Johnson, 26, currently of
Atlanta, was killed and
several others critically
injured in a head-on auto
mobile crash Saturday night
about midnight in front of the
Marvin Davis home on
Highway 42.
A. B. Duncan of Jackson
has been appointed Butts
County chairman for the 1956
Easter Seal drive.
Mrs. Mary Ann Leverette
won sls at Saturday’s
Appreciation Day program,
or five percent of the S3OO
Treasure Chest. Clarence
Coggins was emcee of the
program and awarded a $5
gift certificate to Wes Brown,
of Jackson.
Funeral services for Brax
ton B. Vaughn, 67, were held
Monday afternoon from the
Old Bethel Primitive Baptist
Church.

J. L. Lyons, former mayor
of Jackson and Butts County
representative, has accepted
the chairmanship for Butts
County of the National
Victory Clothing collection to
relieve mass suffering in
war-devastated countries of
Europe.
Directors of the Butts
County Freezer Locker Com
pany, Inc. have elected J. K.
Sitton as president for the
ensuing year.
Announcement is made
this week of the sale of the
business of Paul Tyler &
Company, grocery and mar
ket, to W. E. McCarty of
Jackson and William Sasser
of Macon.
With a county goal of
$1,900, Doyle Jones, Jr. has
been named to head the 1946
roll call campaign of the
American Red Cross in Butts
County.
Fire of undetermined
origin destroyed the Wig
wam, a night club located on
Highway 42 between Indian
Springs and Jackson.
News of 40 Years Ago
A Roosevelt party, spon
sored by civic clubs of the
community, will be given at
the Jackson clubhouse
Thursday night. Proceeds
will go to the Warm Springs
Foundation. Music will be
furnished by Miss Trudie
Moore and the Whidby Trio.
Tickets will be fifty cents per
couple.
Butt County farmers have
recently signed contracts for
600 to 800 acres of pimiento
peppers to be grown for the
Pomona Products Company.
Blanketed with a six inch
snow, the heaviest in years,
traffic in this section is
practically at a standstill.
The snow began Wednesday
afternoon and continued all
night and it was still snowing
Thursday morning. School
was suspended on Thursday.
At the Princess Theater,
Fred Astaire and Ginger
Rogers in “Top Hat,” and
Ann Southern and Gene
Raymond in “Hooray for
Love.”
