Devotional
Rev. Don Folsom, Pastor
First Baptist Church
TAKE YOUR CHILD
TO CHURCH
The best thing a parent can
do for a child is to take him to
church, not send him.
Mr. J. Edgar Hoover, the
former Chief of the FBI has
some challenging words
along this line.
“Shall I force my child to
go to Sunday School and
church? Yes! And with no
further discussion about the
matter!
Startled? Why?
How do you answer Junior
when he comes to the
breakfast table and says, on
Monday morning, very rebel
liously, “I’m not going to
school today.” You know
Junior goes!
How do you answer when
Junior comes in very much
besumdged, and says, “I’m
not going to take a bath.”
You know Junior bathes!
How do you answer when
Junior theatened with illness
says, “I’m not going to take
medicine.” You know, he
takes it!
Why all this timidity, then
in the realm of his spiritual
guidance and growth? Going
to wait and let him decide
what church to let him go to
when he is old enough? Quit
your kidding! You didn’t wait
until he wished to go to public
school and get an education
.... or until he made up
his mind as to whether or not
he wished to take medicine
that would make him well.
Afraid he’ll succumb to the
old wives’ tale about “too
much religion when he was
young .. . parents made
him go.” Some sort of a gag!
Look about you; the story is
obviously false, despite its
currency. Do you suppose
that because you insist over
his protests that Junior take
a bath that he will turn into a
“bathless Scroggins” when
he is twenty-one?
Do you suppose that
because you insist he takes
his medicine, he’ll take up
Christian Science when he
grows up?
What shall we say any time
when Junior announces he
doesn’t like Sunday School or
church? That’s an easy one.
Just be consistent!
‘Junior in our home, we all
go to Sunday School and
Church, and that includes
you!’ Your firmness and
example here will furnish a
bridge over much youthful
rebellion, and may travel
into rich and satisfying
now;

The parents of American

blow against the forces which
contribute to juvenile delin

I like the emphasis Mr.
Hoover puts on TAKING our
children to Church regularly.
If they go enough our
unconscious minds are satu
rated with the great ideals of
religion. The noblest pass
ages from the Bible will
become a part of our lives.
