WORDS ARE WONDERFUL THINGS!
Words are wonderful things!
They help us in expressing our appreciation to God for
all tha t He has done for us. They help us in expressing our love
for other people. They help us in sharing with others
wonderful truths which we have found in life. They even
provide a medium by which we can share a moving story.
I would like to use some words to do that—to share a
moving story. It is such a simple story. Perhaps that is the
best kind of story—simple. Because most of us can
understand a simple story.
One day a man was walking down the street. He ran
into a boy who had two birds in a cage. The man asked the boy
about the birds. “Where did you get those two beautiful
birds ? ” The boy was quick to reply. “I set a trap and captured
them,” he said.
“What do you plan to do with the birds?” the man
asked. “Well, I’m going to take them home and feed them to
my cat,” the boy replied. The man looked at the two lovely but
helpless birds. He thought about the beautiful music the birds
could bring if they were free. He thought about other birds
who loved the birds in the cage and how the other birds would
miss their friendship. He thought about freedom and how
much he, himself, loved freedom.
“How much will you take for the cage and the birds?”
the man asked the boy. “You must be kidding,” the boy said.
“What would anyone want with two worthless birds?” Again
the man asked. “How much do you want for the cage and the
birds?” The boy saw the determined look on the the face of
the man. “How much money do you have?” he asked the
man. “Son, I have only two dollars,” came the reply.
There was a moment of silence and then the boy
replied. “I will take two dollars for the birds.” The man
reached down into his pocket and took out the two dollars. He
gave them to the boy. The boy handed the man the cage and
the two birds. As he walked away he made this statement:
“Stupid man. To give his last two dollars for a pair of
worthless birds.”
The man turned and opened the cage. His heart sang
with gladness as he let the birds go free. And everyone he met
walking down the street wondered about the expression of joy
and happiness on the man’s face. They all wondered why he
carried an empty bird cage.
What is the relation between the story and us? Simply
this. We are like the birds in the cage. The devil baited his
trap with the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. He had
man in his grip, and his only desire was to destroy man.
But God’s heart was full of hurt because it was His
desire that man should be free. So He asked the devil what he
would take for those who were caught in the cage of sin. The
devil at first thought God was kidding. He could not
understand why God would want to free worthless man.
The devil finally decided to make a joke and say to God
that he would let man go but only at the expense of God’s Son.
But to the surprise of the devil, God agreed to give His Son.
This He did at Calvary. And now those who desire can walk
out of the cage of sin into the freedom of life eternal!
What wonderful things words are!

OLD KITCHEN, NEW LOOK
By Joy Miller
If you’re dissatisfied with
your kitchen, you can make
it more functional, more at
tractive and more livable
without spending a small
fortune.
Is it dark and drab? The
two easiest ways to handle
that situation are with new
paint and new lighting. Use
semi-gloss enamel rather
than a flat paint for the cab
inets and woodwork it’s
much easier to keep clean.
For lighting you may well
need nothing more than to
replace the bulb fixture
with a fluorescent illumina
tion. This creates a softer,
more even light with much
less glare, if any.
Are the cabinets out
dated and tacky? Probably
just the doors give that ap
pearance, so it’s not neces
sary to replace the entire
cabinets, which could be
costly. If the doors have lip
overhangs, cut them down
to fit flush in the cabinet
frames and change the hard
ware to metal or ceramic.
What about the floor? Is
it covered with old linoleum
‘Whatsoever
Things'
By Donald E. Wildmon
that’s stained and beginning
to curl and crack? Replace
it with a no-wax floor.
You’ll find them available in
dozens of colors and pat
terns from Armstrong, the
people known for resilient
flooring.
Are the work surfaces in
your kitchen covered with
knife cuts, scratchy and
hard to clean? Build or buy
a chopping block counter
top, and do all your cutting,
dicing and pounding on
that. A laminated surface on
the rest of your counters
will last for years without
looking old and worn.
It’s not hard to cook up
a kitchen that can be as sat
isfying to cook in as is the
food you cook in it.
