Commissioners
Set Rules For
Beer and Wine
Members of the Butts
County Board of Commis
sioners have voted unani
mously to license the sale of
beer and wine in unincor
porated areas of Butts
County.
The license fee for a retail
distributor will be SSOO per
year and for a wholesaler
SIOO per year.
Proceeds from the license
and tax of beer and wine will
be divided equally between
the Butts County Recreation
Authority and the Butts
County Mulit-Purpose Build
ing.
The Multi-Purpose Build
ing, to be constructed on land
donated by Avondale Mills,
will house the Training
Center for Mentally Retard
ed, the Butts County Health
Department, the Butts
County Department of
Family and Children Ser
vices and other county
related departments as
deemed necessary.

the sale, tax, and licensing of
beer and wine is carried
under the legal notice in this
week’s issue of the Progress-
Argus.
Joe Harris
Seeks Post On
Commission
Joe Harris, Jackson busi
nessman and resident of
Jenkinsburg, has qualified
for Post No. 2 on the Butts
County Commission in the
August 10th Democratic
primary.
A native Butts Countian, he
is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.
G. Harris of Jenkinsburg.
He is a graduate of Jackson
High School and holds
memberships in the Jenkins
burg Methodist Church,
Ringgold Lodge No. 90,
Jackson Chapter No. 54,
Royal Arch Masons, Loyal
Order of the Moose Lodge
No. 2170, Henry County and is
president of the Butts County
CB Club.
The Harris family resides
in Jenkinsburg with their two
children, Lee Anne and
Emily Jo.
A CORRECTION
In last week’s issue in a
story concerning a luncheon
for Jackson Primary Gifted
Students, the name Tommy
Cook was included in error.
The name should have read
Tammi Cook. The Progress-
Argus regrets this mistake
and is happy to make this
correction.
KIWANIS KAPERS ON
TV SATURDAY NIGHT
The Kiwanis Kapers com
petition held in May was
taped by WSB-TV Atlanta
and will be shown on
Saturday, June 19, at 10:00
p.m. on Channel 2.
Miss Lindy Mackey of
Jackson represented the
Jackson Kiwanis Club and
will appear on the TV show.
Schedule Of Events
Butts County Week
Dick O’Hara, president of the Butts County Chamber of
Commerce and organizer of the up and coming Butts County
Week 1976 celebration has come up with a tentative schedule
of events for the week of festivities. Though somewhat
incomplete at this early date and subject to changes as plans
for the celebration mature, the tentative schedule is
presented below.
The festivities will begin on July 4 and will continue
through July 10.
July 4th Bell ringing at 12:00 noon.
Freedom Rally on the square sponsored by the Butts
County Ministerial Association.
Fireworks Display at Wallace Field after dark.
July sth All Day Fun-For-All at Avondale Park
including: sports, recreation, games, barbecue, music,
family picnics, nature hikes, bike riding and just plenty of fun
for everyone.
July 6th Open for community activities.
July 7th Membership Golf Tournament at Deer Trail
Golf Course.
Sidewalk Sale starting at 12:00 noon sponsored by the
Butts County Chamber of Commerce and participating
merchants of Butts County.
July Bth Golden Oldies Disco Party. Free to all who
can prove that they are 50 years old or more. Prizes will be
awarded to the oldest man and woman and to the oldest
married couple and the couple married the longest attending
the dance. All those under 50 will be charged an admission of
$1.50. Johnny Smolka will spin the discs.
July 9th Rock-n-Roll Dance at the National Guard
Armory, 7:30p.m. to 12:00a.m. Admission will be $1.50 for all
ages.

The BuFts County Chamber of Commerce is still
looking for additional support and participation from groups,
clubs and individuals of the community. Those planning to
participate in the celebration in anyway should contact a
member of the Chamber of Commerce or of the celebration
committee immediately.
CEDAR ROCK REVIVAL
BEGINS JUNE 27TH
A revival is scheduled for
Cedar Rock Congregational
Methodist Church, beginning
June 27th and extending
through July 2nd, at 8 p.m.
each evening. Evangelist for
the revival will be the Rev.

Miss Haisten
Is Ordained
As Deacon

Miss Cissie Haisten was
ordained a deacon in North
Georgia Conference Wednes
day evening at 8 o’clock at
the Glenn Memorial United
Methodist Church, Atlanta.
Miss Haisten, a graduate of
Jackson High School, attend
ed Middle Georgia College
and Georgia Southern and
has been at Emory Candler
School of Theology since
March 1975 where she is in
her second year of a
three-year program. She is
working toward her Master
of Divinity degree.
She received her license to
preach at the Jackson United
Methodist Church recently.
She will be working this
summer as assistant recrea
tional director at the First
Baptist Church in Decatur.
Miss Haisten is the
daughter of Mrs. Kathryn
Haisten and the late Ben M.
Haisten.

Van Kersey
Seeks Post On
Commission
Van Kersey, Butts County
businessman, has qualified
for Post No. 3 on the Butts
County Commission in the
General Primary of August
10th.
A native of Butts County,
he has operated Kersey’s
Boat Service on Jackson
Lake for the past 21 years.
He is married to the former
Frankie Mae Duke and they
make their home in the Stark
community. They have three
children, two of whom are
grown.
This will be Kersey’s first
entry into the political field
and he will have competition
from Joe Harris, George N.
Martin, Jr. and Dr. William
C. Mitchell, Jr.
Dave Bailey
Seeks Post As.
Commissioner
D. W. (Dave) Bailey,
chairman of the Butts County
Board of Commissioners, has
announced as a candidate to
succeed himself to Post No. 2
in the General Primary of
August 10th.
The veteran politician is
seeking his fifth term as a
member of the Butts County
Commission.
A native of Butts County,
he is a son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Joe Bailey, his father
long being associated with
the political affairs of the
county. He received his
education in the Butts County
School System.
Mr. and Mrs. Bailey, the
former Lois Reynolds of
Jackson, make their home in
the Iron Springs community.

Recipe Contest
Calling all cooks! Your
favorite microwave recipe
could be worth $725. Why not
find out by sending your
recipe to Peggy Foy,
Chairperson for the Georgia
Microwave Cook-Off Contest.
It does not have to be your
original recipe. You could
win with an old time favorite
as long as microwave
instructions are given.
You have until July 15 to
submit your recipe in the
four separate categories for
the contest: appetizers and
hors d’oeuvres; main dish
using meat, seafood, cheese
or eggs; vegetable casse
roles; desserts. However,
you are only eligible to win in
one category.
Judging of recipes will be
done in the Georgia Congres
sional Districts. Each first
place winner from the 10
districts will cook his or her
recipe at the Fall Festival of
Microwave Cooking on Sep
tember 18 at the Macon Mall
in Macon.
At the cook-off, recipes will
be judged on taste, appear
ance, originality, and suit
ability to microwave cook
ing.
Any resident of Georgia, 18
years of age or older, is
eligible to enter except
practicing economists and
persons engaged in the
manufacture and-or sale of
microwave ovens. Participa
tion by men will be
welcomed. Entry forms for
submitting recipes are avail
able from all Georgia Power
Offices, EMC Offices, deal
ers in microwave ovens, and
some grocery and drug
stores.
The cook-off is sponsored
by the Home Service Com
mittee of the Georgia
Electrification Council. Mrs.

NAMED TO STATE
BAR BOARD

Franklin Freeman, Jr., has
been re-elected to the Board
of Governors of the State Bar
of Georgia representing the
Flint Judicial Circuit.
The Board of Governors,
consisting of more than 85
members, is the policy
making body of the State Bar
of Georgia. Each judicial
curcuit is represented on the
board by at least one
member for each Superior
Court judge authorized for
the circuit.
Total of 29 Candidates Seek
12 Butts County Offices
When the qualifying cur
tain dropped last Wednesday
at 12 o’clock 29 candidates
had qualified for the 10
county offices to be filled in
the General Primary of
August 10th. With all three
Countv Commission posts to
be filled, a total of 12 officers
will be elected August 10th or
in the run-off election of
August 31st.
In addition to the county
officers, Butts voters will
also vote on two Georgia
House seats, a Senate seat,
Flint Circuit Superior Court
Judge, District Attorney and
U S. Congressman from the
Sixth Congressional District.
The political line-up, not
the official ballot, will appear
as follows:

Makes Move
To Jackson
Members of the Jackson
Presbyterian Church and the
community at large have
extended a cordial welcome
to the Rev. David Beville and
family who moved this week
into the Presbyterian manse
on Ball Street.
Rev. Beville will preach his
first sermon in the Jackson
church at 11 a.m. on Sunday,
An installation service will
be held Sunday afternoon,
June 27, with the new
pastor’s father and members
of the Atlanta Presbytery
taking part.
Rev. Beville accepted the
call to service the local
Presbyterians while he was
associate pastor, under the
Rev. Wade Bell, of the First
Presbyterian Church of Val
dosta.
The new minister is a
native of Atlanta, a graduate
of Brown High School, of
Georgia Tech where he
received the B.S. Degree in
Industrial Management and
of Columbia Theological
Seminary in Decatur.
He has served the Trinity
Presbyterian Church of
Clearwater, Fla. and the
Bethany Presbyterian
Church of College Park as
student assistant and for the
past two years has been
associate pastor of the
Valdosta Church.
He is married to the former
Margaret Mowbray of At
lanta and lists golf, fishing,
and tennis as hobbies.
Norsworthy
Withdraws In
Post 2 Race
R. C. (Pee Wee) Norswor
thy has withdrawn from the
Butts County Commission
race for Post No. 2,
according to Probate Judge
Luther J. Washington, who is
in charge of the August 10th
General Primary.
In a letter to Judge
Washington, Norsworthy re
quested that his name be
withdrawn from the list of
candidates and not be
included on the August 10th
ballot.
Judge Washington said he
understood that Mr Nors
worthy ran into unexpected
difficulty in clearing his
can< dacy with his employer.
His withdrawal leaves
three candidates in the race
for Post No. 2, the incumbent

Psychology from the Univer
sity of Nebraska at Omaha.
She has been active in the
Atlanta and Georgia Mental
Health Associations since
1964. serving on the board of
directors for both. She has
held numerous PTA offices
and eo-chaired a church
group, The Mariners, in
Omaha for one year. Her
church affiliation is still
maintained at St. John’s
Methodist in Atlanta.

Effectiveness and Teacher
Effectiveness Training, she
directed a project in the
Atlanta School System in this
field before moving to her
present home in Cork.

Commissioner
Ricky Beauchamp, owner
of a Jackson business
service, has qualified for the
post of Tax Commissioner in
the Democratic General
Primary of August 10th.
He is a native of Butts
County, son of Mrs. J. O.
Beauchamp and the late Mr.
Beauchamp.
Graduating from Jackson
High School, he also has a
Bachelor of Business Ad
ministration degree from
North Georgia Military
College.
He is a member of the
Jackson United Methodist
Church, a former member of
the Jackson Kiwanis Club
and a past Scout Master of
Troop 80 in Jackson.

Bill Jones. Jackson attor
ney and Superintendent of
the Butts County School
System, has qualified as a
candidate for the Georgia
House of Representatives
from the 78th District. The
District includes Lamar
County and major portions of
Butts and Pike Counties.
Jones, 31, is a life long
resident of Butts County,
educated in the public
schools and a graduate of the
University of Georgia in 1966
with a Business Admini
stration Degree. He received
his Masters of Education
Degree in School Administra
tion from the University in
1970. In 1973 he was awarded
a Bachelor of Laws Degree
from Atlanta Law School.
He has been elected twice,
in 1968 and 1972, as County
School Superintendent but is
not a candidate to succeed
himself in the August
primary.
Jones is married to the
former Martha Saunders, a
teacher in the Butts County
kindergarten program. They
have one son, Bryan, three.
Their church membership is
in the Macedonia Baptist
Church at Stark.
The educator-lawyer holds
membership in the Georgia
Association of Educators, the
Georgia Association of
School Superintendents, the
National Education Associa
tion, the State Bar of
Georgia, the American Bar
Association, Indian Springs
Masonic Lodge and the
Jackson Exchange Club. He
is presently serving as
president of the Flint Circuit
Bar Association.
His opponent in the District
78 Representative race will
be J. R Smith, of Barnes
