Local Post Office to Cancel Mail Sunday, July 4, 12 to 3 For the convenience of local philatelists, the Jack son post office will be open Sunday afternoon, July Fourth, from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. to cancel stamps, $2 dollar bills or other materials that will become collector’s items. In making the announce ment, Postmaster Tom Webb explained the unusual cir cumstance of the post office being opened on Sunday, and a holiday, with this state ment, “July 4, 1976 has such significance that we intend to OTHER RETAILERS GET BEER. WINE LICENSES According to Billy Sutton, clerk of the Butts County Board of Commissioners, three Butts County retail stores were licensed last week to sell beer and wine. This brings the total licensed to date to ten. Receiving licenses were Duke’s Grocery, Cawthon’s Grocery and Bait Shop and Preston Grocery of Jenkins burg. NEW' VOTERS MUST REGISTER BY JULY 9 Time is running out on the 18-year-olds, new residents, and those who wish to vote in Butts County for the first time in the forthcoming August 10th general primary. All new voters must register with the Butts County Board of Registrars in the County Commission office in the courthouse by Friday, July 9th. There are no residency requirements for new residents. Deer Trail Golf Tournamenf Is Scheduled for Wednesday The Deer Trail Golf Club’s annual Membership Tourna ment will be a featured part of Butts County’s Bicenten nial celebration and will be held on Wednesday, July 7th, at the popular local links. Bill Nelson, of Jackson, will be defending the cham pionship title he earned in last year’s tournament. Members ranging in age from 12 to the County’s elite golfers will participate in this year’s play and compete for trophies to be awarded winners of each flight. This event is always a prelude to the annual invitational in the fall take part in the bicentennial celebration in a very special way.” “For as little as 13 cents,” Postmaster Webb said, “we will officially postmark your envelopes, cards or any other bicentennial memorabilia with the Jackson, Georgia, July 4, 1976 cancellation.” The Jackson office will have a limited number (600) of the Spirit of ‘76 commemo rative stamp issue. This issue consists of three 13 cents stamps and will be offered the public on a first Thousands of Visitors To Crowd County Over Fourth With two state parks and Jackson Lake as drawing cards. Butts County will be brimming over with visitors during the July Fourth holiday period. Estimates of the number of people who will flock into the County’s resort areas range from 20,000 to 50.000 with every hotel room, cabin, and camping area in the County jammed to capacity. Indian Springs and Jack son Lake are again expected to vie for top honors in the tourist draw, with High Falls only a step behind. With every filling station, restaurant and grocery stocked to the gills with supplies, there is not expect ed to be any shortage of food, beverage or gasoline. Ten retail beer and wdne licenses have just been issued to Butts County merchants, and the holiday influx should prove a real windfall to them. Deer Trail members must sign up to play in the July 7th tournament by July 3rd. Three major prizes by Jackson firms for holes-in one elosest-to-the-pin will add interest to this year’s - play. ABW Chevrolet and Car michael Insurance Agency are again offering anew Chevrolet for the first golfer to make a hole-in-one on the par three third hole. Normal post office ser vices, such as money orders and package mailings, will not be available during the special Sunday opening hours, and the Jackson post office will be closed all day on Monday, July sth, on an official holiday, Webb point ed out. With the Fourth coming on Sunday, many stores in Jackson will give their employees a holiday on Monday. July sth. It now appears that most grocery stores and some drug stores will be open in Jackson on the sth, according to a survey by- Dick O’Hara, president of the Butts County Chamber of Commerce, Inc. Shoppers are advised to check with their favorite merchant, if in doubt about his closing hours on Monday. The Jackson post office and all federal and state offices in the County will be closed on Monday, along with the tw'o Jackson banks. Gerald Kersey reports he will have an extra patrol boat on Jackson Lake over the holidays. Sheriff Barney Wilder and Jackson Police Chief Watson Vaughn will have their forces prepared for any emergency situations they may develop. Daniel Ford Sales, Inc. is offering a SIOO certificate good for repairs or service on anew or used car or truck for the golfer putting his tee shot closest to the pin on the seventh hole. This certificate is negotiable and may be transferred by tt winner, if not needed. The trophy case at Deer Trail is filled w ith 24 trophies for the first, second and third place winners in each of the eight flights of competition. The Deer Trail Touring Pros will have their next match at Deer Trail one week following the member ship tournament, on July 4th Jackson Lake Boat Mishap Kills Woman Tragedy struck at Jackson Lake early Saturday after noon as Mrs. Brenda Gail Belvin. 28, of Statesboro, Georgia was fatally injured when the boat in which she was a passenger was struck broadsides by another. Gerald Kersey, Butts County Conservation Ran ger, said the accident occurred about 1:15 p.m. in the Tussahaw Creek area, across from Strickland’s pasture. The boat occupied by Mrs. Belvin and piloted by her husband. James P. Belvin. was preceding near the shore line when a boat driven by Willaim Poole Conner. Jr., 35, of Decatur, approached on a collision course and when the Belvin boat veered to avoid an accident, it was struck broadside by the other. No charges have been brought against Conner, pending a thorough investi gation of the accident. Kersey said. Mrs. Belvin suffered severe internal injuries and died in the emergency room of Sylvan Grove Hospital. Her husband was thrown from the boat, suffered lacerations on the right arm and leg and was dismissed from Clayton General Hospi tal after treatment. Conner was thrown from his boat by the impact and incurred a broken rib and partially collapsed lung. He was admitted to the DeKalb General Hospital. The Belvins were visiting Mrs. Belvins’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith of Jonesboro, who have a cottage on Jackson Lake. Both boats involved were of the 15-foot, outboard type. Although this is the second fatality on Jackson Lake this year involving boats. Kersey said it was the first involving a boat collision in the last seven or eight years. Funeral services for Mrs. Belvin were held Monday at Dickson’s Jonesboro Chapel. Interment was in the Flovilla City Cemetery. Her family was once a resident of that City and relatives still live in Butts County. CHAMBERS FAMILY REUNION CANCELLED A spokesman for the Chambers family announces that the annual reunion of the VV. M. Chambers family will not be held this year. The reunion is normally held on the first Sunday in Julv Mrs. Avery Of Worth ville Died June 24 Mrs. Geraldine Washing ton Avery, 61, of Route 1, Jackson, Worthville Com munity. died at 8:55 Wednes day evening, June 23rd. at Georgia Baptist Hospital, Atlanta, following open heart surgery. Born in Butts County June 3. 1915, she was daughter of the late Lennie Lee Washing ton and Tassie Kitchens Washington, both of Butts County. She and her husband had made their home in Green ville, Tenn. for many years before moving back to Butts County several years ago. She was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Greenville, Tenn. but had been faithful in attendance in the Worthville Baptist Church and held membership in the Worth ville Chapter No. 516 of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a faithful and dedicated correspondent for the Jack son Progress-Argus for several years. Survivors include her hus band, W. G. Avery of Jackson , one daughter, Mrs. Glenda A. Bell of Atlanta; a son. Michael W. Avery, Coral Springs. Fla.; three grand children. Don McDonald of Atlanta; Will and Wendy Avery of Coral Springs, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Eloise Guess, Fairburn; two brothers, S. A. Washington, Jackson; Julian Washington of Morrow; several nieces 'and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, June 25th. at three o’clock in the Worthville Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarage Tucker officiating. Interment was in the Covington City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Stanley McCart. Clyde Parker, Rebon Maddox, Virgil Smith. Earl Hurst, Lindsey Maddox. Old Timers To Shake Leg To Old Music One of the fun events of the County's Bicentennial cele bration is the Golden Oldies Disco Party set for Thursday night. July 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Recreation Building at Pepperton. Johnny Smolka will spin the discs for the oldsters— you will be admitted free if over 50—and the youngsters, who will be charged an admission price of $1.50. Smolka promises to spin the hit tune of the 40's and 50's, the Glen Miller. Tommy Dorsey, Glen Gray . Jan Garber records of that era that should have the over-50 set in a foot-stomping mood. Dick O'Hara says he is hoping for a good turn-out from all the Young at Heart, regardless of their age, for the dance. DilK OFFICES TO CLOSE FOR mi HOLIDAYS All offices of the Georgia Department of Human Re sources will be closed Monday. July 5, in obser vance of Independence Day in accordance with the proclamation issued by Governor George Busbee. Butts Countians are girding themselves for a week-long celebration of the nation s 200th birthday of freedom from Sunday. July 4th through Saturday, Julv 10th. President Dick O’Hara of Carmichael Buys Local Insurance Cos. One of the oldest insurance agencies in Jackson w-ill change hands August Ist when the Jackson Insurance Agency will be merged into the Carmichael Insurance Agency. Announcement of the sale was made jointly this week by M. W. Carmichael, president of the Carmichael Insurance Agency, and Frank Barnes, president of the C&S Bank of Jackson. The Jackson Insurance Agency was organized by F. S. Etheridge Cos. and was purchased in 1910 by the Jackson National Bank, which operated it continuous ly until that bank was purchased by the Citizens and Southern Bank During the month of July, the Jackson Insurance Agency will operate under the present management of the C&S Bank of Jackson. Barnes pointed out. with the effective date of the sale being August Ist. Through the purchase of the Jackson Insurance Agency, the Carmichael Insurance Agency will be come one of the larger insurors in the middle Georgia area. The firm has already earned a solid reputation for its personal service and prompt payment of claims. Rev. Beville Installed By Presbyterians At an impressive installa tion service Sunday after noon at the Jackson Presby terian Church, the Rev. David Beville was formally installed as pastor of the local church. A Commission appointed by the Atlanta Presbytery was in charge of the installation service. Mem bers of the Commission were Rev. Tom White, of the Covington Presbyterian Church. Rev Joseph Griggs, of the Bethany Presbyterian Church of College Park, and Rev James Doom, stated supply of the Fellowship Presbyterian Church Assisting in the installation service were ruling elders of the Jackson Presbyterian Church, including Janie Carmichael. Margarett Etheredge. Jo Ann Manley, Vincent Jones. Cecil Scar brough and Richard Watkins. The service was well attended by members of the local congregation and out of-town visitors, all of whom enjoyed a reception given in Fellowship Hall immediately following the installation service. $6.24 Per Year In Advance the Butts County Chamber of Commerce. Inc., with the assistance of a group of hard-working committees, deserves credit for putting together a variety of events that should capture the attention and interest of all age groups.
