Social Security
Social Security News
By
Kate McLaurin
Social Security is a
“people” program; nearly
all Americans have social
security protection-either as
workers or dependents of
workers. More and more
these days, however, women
are asking questions about
what social security means
to the. The following are just
a few examples of the
questions women are asking
their social security offices.
If you have a question about
social security or if you think
you might be eligible for a
social security payment,
write your social . security
office at the Federal Office
Bldg., Griffin, Ga. 30224.
Q. I’ve made my husband
my family my career,, and
I’ve never worked on any
other “job”. I’ll be 62 next
year, and I’ve started
wondering if I’ll be able to
receive a social security
check? P.W., Jackson
A. You have social security
protection through your
husband’s work if he’s
working in a job that is
covered by social security (9
out of 10 workers today are
earning protection under
social security). Regardless
of your age, you can get
payments if your husband
retires or becomes disabled
if you are caring for a child
under 18 or a disabled child
entitled to social security
benefits. If you don’t have a
child in your care, you must
be at least age 62 to receive a
benefit when your husband
dies or becomes disabled. Be
sure to contact your social
security office three months
prior to your 62nd birthday
for further information.
Q. My husband and I both
work in jobs covered by
social security. Can I receive
two social security checks
one based on his work and
one based on mine? A. A.,
Jackson
A. You can get retirement
benefits either on your own
record or on your husband’s
whichever will pay the
larger benefit. If a person is
eligible on more than one
work record, the payment
amount is equal to the larger
amount.
Q. I have been told that
when I reach age 62, I’ll
receive a wife’s benefit on
my husband’s record be
cause his earnings have been
so much higher than mine.
What will happen to the
social security that I’ve paid
in on my job? D.C., Jackson
A. While you have been
working under social se
curity, you have been
building protection against a
reduction in income due to
health, disability, or retire
ment. Even though you
might receive benefits based
on your husband’s work when
you reach age 62, you still
have several options. First,
you have disability and
survivors protection while
you are working. This means
that monthly benefits would

be payable if you I became
disabled or die after having
worked long enough under
social security. Second, sup
pose your husband keeps on
working and earns too much
to draw social security
payments. Or, suppose he’s
younger than you are. You
could go ahead and retire on
your own record. Then, when
he retires, you can take
wife’s payments if they
would be higher. Third,
regardless of your husband’s
age, you can draw benefits
on your own wage record
before age 65. Your payment,
however, will always be
reduced-even if you’re over
65 when you start your wife’s
benefit on his record.
Q. I’m 63 years old, and my
husband is 65.1 draw a wife’s
benefit on his social security
record. We have been having
marital problems, and he is
threatening to divorce me
and cut off my checks. I’ve
never worked and we’ve been
married 50 years. Can he
stop my checks?
A. No. A divorced woman
can receive social security
beneifts on her ex-husband’s
record so long as she’s age 62
and has been married to him
for at least 20 years.
Q. My husband suffered a
stroke shortly after we
married in 1936. He has never
been able to work under
social security. I have
worked all these years at a
good job. Is there any way for
my husband to draw on my
social security record? C.P.
Jackson
A. Your husband could
receive benefits on your
record if he’s dependent on
you for at least one-half of
his support and is age 62 or
older. In order to receive
survivors benefits, if he
doesn’t have young children
in his care, he must have
been dependent on you for
support and be age 60 or
older or between age 50 and
60 and disabled.
