Works With Ecologists Are electric utility com panies doing all they can to help maintain a clean, healthful environment? The history of power production in Georgia indi cates that environmental quality was a major consid eration here long before such matters were considered front-page news. Forty years ago, when few Georgians were concerned about the environmental impact of electric generating stations, Georgia’s major producer of electricity—the Georgia Power Company— was installing clean air equipment on its coal-fired plants. Today, the large generat ing facilities needed to meet the growing demand for electricity require elaborate and expensive environ mental protection equip ment. This is one of the reasons the price of electric ity has gone up in recent, years. Over the next three years. Georgia Power ex pects to spend more than S2OO million on such equipment. The modern electrostatic precipitators used on today’s coal-burning plants remove 9!) percent of the particulate matter from stack gases. Tall stacks—some as high as 1.000 feet-disperse combus tion gases so that ground concentrations are minimiz ed. When selecting a plant site, the company gives a great deal of consideration to the near-by lake or river. Huge cooling towers have been constructed at many larger plants so that water can be cooled and reused without being returned to its source. This assures generat ing station operations will not significantly affect the temp erature of the river or lake. Power production adds no pollutants to water adjacent to generating plants. The one word that best describes Brownie during the summer months is lazy. Whenever the mercury slips up past ninety, you are sure to find Brownie curled up in a cool place, catching a nap. Her favorite spot for snoozing is under an old plank on the front porch. When she is not sleeping, Brownie can usually be found playing with one of the three Lunsford children or the family cat. But to everyone else, Brownie is gentle and never growls or bites. Tom, the one-year-old of the family, grew up with Brownie, and the two seem to get along well. Not only do they sleep together in the rocking chair on the front porch, but the unlikely couple spend much of their playtime together. Brownie enjoys going for a swim in a nearby creek, then dry off and be rocked to sleep by Levenia, age 12. Feeding Brownie is never a problem, as she will eat practically anything. Her regular diet is composed of table scraps, with candy given as a dessert. One of the most unusual experiences of the Lunsford family was seeing Brownie chase a red fox around the yard. The two animals played together as if they were old friends, with the fox finally leaving, never to return.
