OLD TIME
REMEDIES
BY TOM O’DELL
Hayfever was a most annoying ailment, even back in
Grandpa's day. Here are some of the things he might have
done for relief: Rub the ears briskly when there is the
slightest indication of fullness in the nose. Or he might have
inhaled fumes of ground coffee, sprinkled over hot coals.
The very worst case of hayfever was said to be immunized
by the use of the leaves and flowers of common ragweed and
goldenrod. Mix the herbs and use one half ounce to each pint
of boiling water. Steep ten minutes, strain. Take wineglassful
four times daily. Here's another: Crush fresh milkweed in a
piece of cheesecloth and inhale deeply. It must be crushed
fresh daily. (Even if these don't work, you'll get the pleasure
of crushing those bad old weeds.)

Check On-the-Job
Training for Vets,
Employers Urged
ATLANTA Veterans
who were discharged from
military service after Jan,
31, 1955, and who are in
terested in on-the-job train
ing programs, are advised
that their entitlement ex
tends through Aug. 31,
1977, or ten years after their
discharge, whichever is later.
Also eligible for stfch training
are the wives and children of
deceased veterans who died
of service-connected causes.
Whereas it was once the
responsibility of a veteran to
find an employer who might
hire him and then apply for
an on-the-job training pro
gram to be established in his
firm, current procedures en
able employers to have such
programs organized and ap
proved in advance.
Georgia Veterans Service
Director Pete Wheeler said
that an employer may make
application at any Veterans
Service Office to establish
one or more on-the-job train
ing programs in his place of
business.
“The employer may have
some particular veteran in
mind for the program,” said
Wheeler, “or he may want to
establish the program with
out a chosen veteran. In this
case, it would be designated
as ‘Pre-Approved’ and could
be used as a recruiting
device.
Currently, almost 2,000
veterans are engaged in on
the-job training programs
throughout Georgia. Inter
ested veterans are advised
to check with the state em
ployment service of the
Georgia Department of
Labor which maintains
listings of firms providing
on-the-job training.

FISHING SLOW-TO-GOOD
IN COUNTY THIS WEEK
According to Ben Gunn,
fishing forecaster for the
Department of Natural Re
sources, fishing in Butts
County for the week of
August 1-7 will not be ideal.
Gunn says fishing at High
Falls where the water will be
low and clear will be slow for
all species. At Jackson Lake
where the water will be down
and clear, fishing will be
good for bass using plastic
worms, good for catfish and
bream, fair for crappies.
Alexander is said to have
used a stone he recovered
from a fish as a nightlight.
