Howard Janke Is Active In Governor s Honor Program dahlonega, ga. Some teachers live by the textbook. And their students gain an education based on the experience of others. But Howard Janke believes a total learning experience requires a different ap proach. ‘You’ve got to get the students involved,” Janke says, “and you’ve got to approach education with a ‘hands on’ attitude.” Janke, a resident of Griffin and a biology instructor at Woodward Academy in College Park, is one of 35 Georgia high school teachers working with new concepts in education at the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program at North Georgia College. The Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) was found ed in 1964 under the administration of former Georgia Governor Carl San ders. It’s purpose is to expose gifted Georgia high school students to a total positive learning experience and allow the State Deparment of Education to develop new teaching concepts. The program was limited to Wesleyan College in Macon and 400 students until this summer. Governor George Busbee enlarged the program this year to include an additional 200 students and a second campus with state funds and a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission. Janke is one of two science teachers working with the Program’s Science Depart ment. “The science program here is based on exploration of experiences rather than a utilization of textbooks,” Janke said. “We’re employing all sorts of techniques used in research projects,” he added. “The students are actually working with micro biology, animal behavior, the effects of growth substances on plants and other studies related to scientific re search.” Janke also said two promising new concepts in FRANK BAILEY AND FRIENDS GO TO WASHINGTON Join The Frank Bailey Team PRANK BAILEY IjggL : ' N ' ” * 2m .■*. - ShJWbflW Georgia education are being explored here: the “cluster” and career exploration. He explained the “cluster” is an educational concept which utilizes many different disciplines and ideas in one experience. “The 200 students here were divided into two groups at the beginning of the program." Janke said, “and each group has been working within various fields of study of approach relevant social problems such as aging, dying, future technology, famine, land uses as well as current issues such as politics.” “The cluster idea is exciting,” Janke continued. “It’s an interesting technique for teaching gifted students by utilizing all resources in a school. It’s the coming thing in gifted education.” Janke also said the career exploration program here represents a promising con cept in Georgia education. He said the program gives students a realistic view of Democrat for Congress "When I go to Washington, you'll be there" Paid for by the Frank Bailey Campaign Fund. Reply to P. O. The Reynolds aluminum recycling truck will be across from City Hall from 1 to 2:30 p.m. every other Wednesday, August 4 and 18. Joe Arnett, Reynolds’ district manager, said that collectors are usually in line when the truck arrives. "R\ reducing the truck waiting period a little, we will still be able to get everyone's aluminum and yet have more time at the end of the day to process metal at our re cycling center in southeast Atlanta. Ultimately, we’ll be able to recycle aluminum faster and at a cost which will make recycling even more feasible.” The company pays 15 cents a pound for all-aluminum cans and other clean house- HUGH C.
