Princess is a four-year-old
Collie and Lady is a
six-month-old Pekingese.
They are both pets that live
with the Wayne Cook family
on Franklin Street in
Jackson.
Princess is a thoroughbred
Collie although not register
ed. Her mother was also
owned by the Cooks. Wayne
claims Princess as his dog
and it is easy to see why. The
two get along together
perfectly.

Lieut. Adams Wins Gordon
Nuclear Carrier Scholarship
Navy Lieutenant Robin L.
Adams, 29, whose wife Ellen
is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. C. B. Mclntosh of
Jackson, Ga., recently visit
ed Tangier, Morocco, as a
member aboard the nuclear
powered aircraft carrier USS
Nimitz, while deployed in the
Mediterranean.
Adams’ ship, along with
the nuclear-powered cruiser
USS South Carolina’s three
day visit marked the first
time nuclear surface ships
have docked in Tangier.
The Nimitz, South Caro
lina. and nuclear-powered
cruiser California, compose
the first nuclear task force
deployed with the Sixth Fleet
in the Mediterranean.
His ship is homeported in
Norfolk, Va.
A 1971 graduate of Auburn
Univesity, Auburn, Ala., with
a bachelor of science degree,
he joined the Navy in
September 1964.
Disappearance of
Veteran May
Affect Benefits
ATLANTA - The Georgia
Department of Veterans Ser
vice sometimes receives in
quiries pertaining to a veter
an’s eligibility for certain VA
benefits in cases where a vet
eran, seemingly, “just dis
appears.”
Georgia Veterans Service
Director Pete Wheeler says
that when a veteran has dis
appeared for a period of 90
days, or longer, and his
whereabouts remain un
known to his family and the
Veterans Administration, VA
disability compensation or
pension which he was re
ceiving, or was entitled to re
ceive, may be paid to his
wife, children or parents.
The effective date for pay
ment is the day following
the date of the last payment
to the veteran if a claim is re
ceived by the VA.
Should a veteran’s where
abouts become known to the.
VA after payment to depen
dents has begun, such pay
ment to dependents will be

Lady, whose full name is
Cook’s Misty Lady, is a
registered Pekingese.
Lady’s favorite pastimes
include chasing bugs and
sleeping. Princess is more
active, as she likes to play
ball with Gary.
Both dogs are particular
when it comes to their food.
Lady will eat a variety of
foods but much prefers
Mackerel and sardines,
especially fried. Princess
will not tolerate food that she

been selected to receive a
“1000” Club Scholarship to
Gordon Junior College for
Fall quarter.
The daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Joe D. Patterson of
Jenkinsburg, Miss Patterson
was recognized with the
one-quarter tuition scholar
ship for scoring over 1000 on
the Scholastic Aptitude Test.
The national test is administ
ered to high school graduates
seeking admission to colleges
and universities.
The “1000” Club Scholar
ship is one of many
scholarships funded each
year by the Gordon Founda
tion to recognize and encou
rage academic excellence in
high school students.
Miss Patterson will begin
classes at Gordon in Septem
ber.

Lou Moelchert made a trip to
Richmond, Va. and a visit
with Mr. and Mrs. Louie
Moelchert and family. The
Moelcherts returned home

not to her liking.
Princess has been a
nervous dog since lightning
struck several trees in the
Cook yard about a month
ago. Every time it begins
thundering, Princess hides
under the house.
On the other hand, Lady is
not at all nervous. In fact, she
“acts like a cat”, according
to Wayne. Lady comes from
a championship line of show
dogs and really considers
herself to be a person.

Military Aid
Asa result of a recent
survey of hospital standards
by the Office of Civilian
Health and Medical Program
of Uniformed Services
(CHAMPUS), West Central
Georgia Regional Hospital,
Schatulga Road. Columbus,
is now eligible to participate
in the program as a hospital.
This means that all active
duty and retired service
personnel and dependents
are now covered by insur
ance for services offered at
the hospital.
WCGRH is a mental
hospital serving the 29
counties in the West Central
Mental Health and Mental
Retardation District of the
Department of Human Re
sources, including Butts
County.
Four units at the hospital
treat adult psychiatric pa
tients fro counties surround
ing Columbus, Americus,
LaGrange, and Griffin. The
Hospital also has units for the
treatment of alcohol and
drug abusers, children and
adolescents and develop
mentally disabled. W. P.

Scholarship
A former Jackson High
School student has been
selected to
Club Scholarship to Gordon
Junior College for fall
quarter.
Bryant Keith Hobbs, of
.Flovilla, was chosen by the
Gordon Scholarship Com
mittee for scoring over 1000
on the Scholastic Aptitude
Test, a national test adminis
tered to high school gradu
ates seeking admission to
colleges and universities.
The scholarship is funded
by the Gordon Foundation for
one academic quarter of
tuition. Each year the
Foundation sponsors several
scholarships to recognize and
encourage academic excel
lence in high school students.
Hobbs will begin classes at
Gordon in September.
Labor Day
Ends Holiday
Season Here
Butts Countians will watch
the last holiday weekend of
the summer season pass in
review this weekend as the
Labor Day holiday will
provide three-day vacations
for many local workers.
Butts County Schools will
be closed Monday, Septem
ber 6th, as will all state,
federal and county offices.
The Jackson post office
will be closed for the Labor
Day holiday.
The customary crazy-quilt
pattern of closings will find
some Jackson business
houses open and others
closed. Customers are advis
ed to check with their
favorite stores to determine
what their plans are for
conducting business Monday.
Jackson Lake, High Falls
and Indian Springs State
Park are expected to get
their usual influx of fun
seekers, anxious to crowd
one more weekend of outdoor
pleasure into the fast fading
summer season.

Party favors, homemade
