DEVIL POWER-Willie Ward, Atlanta Journal’s back of
the week, and also cited in the Constitution’s Prep Honor Roll
Devils Knock The Wind
Out Of Hurricanes 29-0
By Frank Hearn
Jackson began the evening
by kicking off to Monticello
at their ten yard line where
Monticello’s Ronald Stand
ifer was stopped immediate
ly. With the aid of two illegal
procedure penalties, and one
personal fowl, Monticello
moved about fifty yards on a
drive before the local team
held and forced a Purple
Hurricane punt. Alvin McMi
chael kicked it out of bounds
at the Red Devils 5 yard line.
Halfbacks Terry Shivers
and Merrill Folsom scrambl
ed behind excellent blocking
for about 25 yards and the
Devil offense was apparently
on its way. However, an
illegal procedure penalty
coupled with Lester Nor
wood’s tackle of QB Bill
Fears behind the line halted
proceedings momentarily.
Tommy Sims’ first varsity
punt was high and long
enough to eliminate any
return as Standifer was
again nailed in his tracks at
the 20 yard line. Four plays
later an aroused Devil
defense forced the Hurri
canes to punt.
From their own 40 yard
line Jackson moved in nine
plays for the only score of the
first half. Shivers moved for
one first down across
mid-field and then for
another to the 33 of the
“Canes”. Fears, Ward, and
Folsom took turns carrying it
down to the 14. On third
down, Ward blasted off
tackle behind the blocks of
Robert Anderson, David
Wyatt, and Sims. Eleven
yards later Ward had his and
Jackson’s first score. David
Brown’s point after was wide
left and the score remained
6-0. Both teams sort of spun
their wheels as the first half
quickly came to a close.
At intermission the Devils
made adjustments and went
to a basic football theory
which is found also in Acts
20:35 of the Holy Book.
Tis truly more blessed to give
than receive, so the Red
Devils gave Monticello’s
young football team all they
Ward and Shivers Named
To Prep Honor Roll
Willie Ward and Terry Shivers were cited this
week in the “Atlanta Constitution's Prep Honor
Roll.”
The “Honor Roll” gives special recognition to
outstanding high school football players in the
state. Ward and Shivers were honored for their
performance in a Red Devil 29-0 victory over
Monticello last week.
Commending the Jackson players, the
Constitution article said, “Freshman halfback
Ward gained 231 yards on 31 carries, scored TDs of
four, 15, and 26 yards, ran for a pair of two-point
conversions and was in on six tackles as a corner
back, while junior fullback Shivers gained 97
yards on 17 carries and scored on a two-yard run in
a 29-0 win over Monticello.”
wanted. The Jackson offen
sive line controlled the line of
scrimmage practically every
play during the last half hour
of play. This enabled Ward to
have one of the finest nights a
Jackson High back has ever
had. On 31 carries Ward
ended the night with 211 total
yards and three touchdowns.
After the second half
kickoff, Jackson crunched
out 57 yards in 10 plays to put
the game solidly in a Devil
handbag. Ward and Shivers
tore away for four first
downs and Ward scored the
touchdown after running
over two people in purple
shirts. Brown’s PAT was true
and it was 13 to zero. Wally
Cawthon kicked into the end
zone but Standifer ran it out
to the 15. Monticello could do
no better than 3 more yards
so McMichael kicked again.
Strong defense by the Devil
down linemen and backers
began wearing down the
Hurricane line.
On the next drive, Ward
carried on 9 out of eleven
plays that covered 62 yards.
Shivers scored from six
yards out and Ward ran for
two more points to put things
in cold storage at 21 to zip.
Finally, Ward completed his
first full game as a Red Devil
with a beautiful 25 yard run
over and around purple
shirts for six more points.
Then as a final ipsult he
scored two on the point after.
Jackson was an aroused
team in the second half.
Defensively the entire line
and linebackers were pursu
ing with authority. Monti
cello was at the mercy of the
Red. The interior offensive
line should get half of Willie’s
200 plus yards. The holes
were there. The confidence
should now return. The
Devils needed this win after
last week’s total collapse in
Hogansville’s graveyard.
The Henry County Warhawks
are next tomorrow night in
McDonough. The 2-1 Devils
can make it 3-1 with
continued confidence and
aggressiveness.
THE JACKSON PROCRESS-ARGUS, JACKSON, GEORGIA
gains ground for the Devils as Shivers blocks in the game
Friday night between Jackson and Monticello.
Jackson High School’s Red
Devils got off the deck this
past week in Monticello and
rebounded in fashion from a
humiliating defeat two weeks
ago in Hogansville.

TOUCHDOWN-Terry Shivers gained 97 yards on 17 carries and carried it over from the
two yard line on this play in the Jackson—Monticello game.
MEET THE RED DEVILS
MERRILL FOLSOM
Merrill Folsom, 5’ 6”,
1421 b. Jr. Halfback, is the
son of Rev. and Mrs. Don
Folsom. Merrill is one of
the toughest ball players
pound for pound to ever
play at Jackson. He is a
lough man to bring down
when he is carrying the
ball. He picks his holes
well and can pick up
yardage when there is no
blocking. He started at
halfback for the Red
Devils in their 29-0
slaughter of Monticello.

principle weapon. Willie
Ward was the brightest star
this night from among the
other Devils who shone
almost as bright. The final
score was 29-0, Jackson over
Monticello but the second
half was not really that close.
WESLEY BAKER
Wesley Baker, 6’ 0", 209
lb. Jr. Tackle, is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Neal Baker.
Wesley is one of the most
improved ball players at
Jackson High this year.
After playing on the
B-Team for two years,
Wesley moved up to the
varsity this year and has
seen considerable action
as a left tackle. If Wesley
continues to improve
toward the end of the
season he could be a
starting offensive tackle.
Wesley is one of the most
coachable athletes on the
