PRESBYTERIANS
CELEBRATE THEIR
SESQUI-CENTENNIAL
In celebration of the 150th
anniversary of the Jackson
Presbyterian Church on
Sunday, October 10th, mem
bers and guests were
impressed with a beautiful
service with members and
Rev. David Beville, pastor,
taking part on the program.
Following the service
everyone present was invited
to remain for “dinner on the
grounds” with many being
seated in the fellowship hall,
while others went out on
the lawn.
The historical room proved
most interesting with pic
tures, history, personal
items, etc. displayed in an
attractive manner. A bro
chure giving a brief history
of the church was also
available for those present.
Among the out of town
guests present were Mr. J. A.
McKay,son of the late Dr. M.
M. McKay who was pastor
here from July 1918 to 1923, of
Atlanta; Mrs. Harvey Britt
of Decatur, Rev. and Mrs.
Kirk Nesbit, Enid and lan
Nesbit of Atlanta, Mr. Noye
H. Nesbit of Norcross, Mrs.

daughter, Alison Nichole on
October 3 at Griffin Spalding
County Hospital. Grand

AT TECH GAME
Thirty-one members of the
Jackson High School March
ing Band participated recent
ly in a massed half time band
show on Band Day at the
Twelfth Annual Georgia
Tech-Virginia football game
in Atlanta. Fifteen hundred
band members from all over
the state presented the
half-time show.
Members from Jackson
High School who participated

New Principal
At Henderson
Mrs. Brenda M. Johnson
has been elected as principal
of the Henderson Elemen
tary School to succeed J.M.L.
Comer, who will assume the
School Superintendent’s
office in January.
After being recommended
by Superintendent W. B.
Jones and Superintendent
elect J.M.L. Comer, Mrs.
Johnson received the unani
mous vote of the Butts
County Board of EducaTion
for the post.
Presently, Mrs. Johnson is
serving as assistant principal
at the Henderson Junior High
School. She also serves as
department chairman for
Social Studies and teachers
two Social Studies classes.
She is a graduate of West
Georgia College in Carrollton
and holds a B. A. Degree in
History and a Master of
Education Degree in school
administration and super
vision. This is Mrs. Johnson’s
ninth year in the field of
education. All of her ex
perience has been in Butts
County. She taught American
Government at the Jackson
High School for six years
before moving to the Hender
son Junior High School.
Mrs. Johnson will begin
her duties as principal
November 1, serving with
Mr. Comer for a few days
before assuming full respon
siblity for the school. Mr.
Comer, likewise, will be at
the superintendent’s office
for a period of time before
assuming full responsibility
for that office. The Board of
Education approved this
arrangement to assure a
smooth transition in both
positions.
Mrs. Johnson is married to
Leslie P. Johnson of Jackson
and they have one child,
Ceason.

LOCAL LADIES SERVE AS
HOSTS AT GOV. MANSION
A group of Jackson ladies
went up to Atlanta on
Sunday, October 3rd, and
served as official hostesses
at the Governor’s Mansion
during the afternoon.
Among those making the
trip were Mrs. Charles
Barber, Mrs. M. L. Powell,
Mrs. S. W. Maddox, Jr., Mrs.
L. W. Moelchert, Mrs. E. D.
Briscoe, Mrs. J. W. Carter,
Mrs. L. J. Ball, and Miss
Elizabeth Finley.

Faulkner and sons, Ricky
and Ronnie, of Mableton
were spend the day guests
Sunday of her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Naamon York.
Joining them for dinner were
Mrs. Lavonne Merritt and

Mr. and Mrs. Bert Kinard
of Macon were visitors to
Jackson on Sunday and
attended services at the
Jackson Presbyterian
Church and dinner on the
grounds in celebration of the
150th anniversary of the
church.

The Stark Friendship
Club held its September
meeting at the clubhouse
on the twenty first. There
were twenty nine present,
six of whom were visitors,
but three of them joined
our club, the group is
happy to report.
Mrs. Ruth Redman
gave an inspiring devo
tional on Faith, scripture
taken from Matthew.
Mrs. Bessie McMichael
presided over a short
business meeting after
which she introduced
Mrs. Richard Watkins
and Miss Rachael Wat
kins who presented a
most interesting pro
gram. Rachael demon
strated her art at making
bread. She gave specific
directions as to the
procedure, using an
electric mixer to knead
the dough. She brought
loaves already cooked
which she sliced and
served. Everyone agreed
that it was most delicious.

according to a recent
announcement by Dean
Mack Wayne Craig.
A graduate of Jackson
High School, Miss Goff is a
senior at Lipscomb and is
following a major in Public
Administration. She trans
ferred to Lipscomb from
Alabama Christian College,
Montgomery, Alabama.
Miss Goff qualified for the
Honor Roll at the end of the
summer quarter by making a
minimum gradepoint
average of 3.5 in a 4.0 grading
system.
