CALLING COLLEEN:
How Do You Tell Sister
She’s Being Taken
Advantage Of?
BY COLLEEN DUDGEON
This may seem like a
ridiculous problem to you,
but it is really driving me
crazy. I live with my 25
year-old sis- 1
ter in a small
but comfort
able apart
ment. I’m 29
and we’rel
very close.i
We have!
always gotten along very
well until she started dating
a guy I’ll call Tom. It was
okay with me for her to have
her dates over to the apart
ment for dinner every so of
ten because I do the same
thing. But since she has star
ted going out regularly with
Tom, he eats here every
night of the week and is of
ten here for lunch too. I am
not a tightwad but Tom is
eating me and my sister out
of house and home. He never
offers to chip in for
groceries and when we order
pizza or other carry-out food
he doesn’t even think to pay
his share. I think he is taking
advantage of my sister but
I’m afraid to tell her so
because I think she’ll dislike
my meddling. I have tried
not to be overbearing or
disapproving of what she
does, but it has reached a
point where either he goes,
or I do. What can I do?
IN TROUBLE
Dear IN TROUBLE:
Since you share apart
ment expenses with your
sister you have every right
to voice your opinion on how
the budget is spent. She
probably has not stopped to
notice how much this third
mouth you’re feeding is
costing. Also, as a sister and
a friend, I think you should
explain to her, in a nice
manner of course, that
male-female relationships
should be reciprocal, and
that she is definitely getting
a bad deal.

Amendment 2 gives you the right to keep a good Governor for a second
four-year term. Or send a poor Governor packing. Amendment 2 saves your
tax money. If you choose to re-elect your Governor, he has four more
years to complete needed programs, such as education, energy, new
industry and new jobs for Georgians.
Amendment 2 would remove the obsolete lame duck restriction, giving a
Governor the chance to be effective for his entire term of office.
Amendment 2 would help eliminate the bickering and squabbling that
develop among possible candidates after a Governor’s first two years
in office.
Amendment 2 would make state government more responsible and

Dear NEEDS HELP:
First let me correct your
assumption that all psychi
atrists are bad, “witch doc
tors” who probe patients’
minds and can always find
problems relating to child
birth, etc. Certainly every
profession has a few “bad
eggs” but let’s be reason
able. You may or may not
be fantasizing about your
husbands’ reasons for want
ing to change shifts. Have
you taken time to sit down
and discuss your feelings
with your husband? Does he
know you’re worried about
your marriage? I suspect
he doesn’t. If you have
talked it out, and are still
disagreeing, then see a
marriage counselor who can
help you work out a com
promise and deal with your
feelings openly and honest
ly. Contact the American
Association of Marriage
and Family Counselors in

liable referrals to trained
counselors.

Food Freezer
Tips
By Susan Millsap
Home Economist

Families who are planning
to buy a food freezer need not
worry that an unexpected
power outage will leave them
with a large volume of
thawed meats and vege
tables.
Actually, the power supply
in this area is available more
than 99 percent of the time,
so the odds are small that
food will be spoiled because
of a power outage. In the
event a temporary outage
does occur, there are steps
you can take to minimize
losses and inconvenience.
If weather conditions and
reports indicate your power
may go out, turn your freezer
control to its lowest setting.
The lower temperature will
delay thawing of food when
the power goes off.
In a completely filled
freezer, food should remain
frozen about two days if the
door is not opened. It helps to
cover the freezer with thick
paper and a heavy blanket.
Be careful to avoid covering
the air vents.
If it appears the food may
start to thaw before power is
restored, there are several
actions you can take. When
the outside temperature is 26
degrees or lower, you can
wrap food in thick paper and
place outside. It should be
kept out of direct sunlight
and away from animals.
Another alternative is taking
frozen food in insulated
boxes to a frozen storage
locker plant. Some freezer
owners like to make arrange
ments with a near-by locker
plant before an emergency
occurs. In any event, it’s
advisable to call first to be
sure the plant is operating
and has room for your food.
Dry ice can be helpful
when the freezer will be off
for more than a day or so.
About 25 pounds of dry ice
should hold the temperature
of a half full 1.0-cubic foot
cabinet below freezing for
two or three days. If the
cabinet is nearly full, food

will stay frozen three or four
days providing dry ice is put
in soon after the power goes
off. Put heavy cardboard on
top of the food and place dry
ice on top of cardboard.
Once the power is on again,
inspect the food to see how
much thawing has occurred.
If food has warmed over a
period of several days to a
temperature of 40 degrees or
higher, it probably is not
suitable for refreezing.
Partially thawed meats
and vegetables can be safely
refrozen if there still are ice
crystals in the package and
no unusual color oi odor or
other signs of spoilage are
present. Even partial thaw
ing reduces the quality of
food, so refrozen foods should
be used as soon as possible.
Use seafood, liver and
poultry first.
