hospitalized because the full
nature of its problem cannot
be determined by physical
examination alone. In such
cases, it will undergo
hospital laboratory tests. A
white blood cell count may be
run in order to determine if
an infection is present. Other
tests may be required to
identify the exact kind of
infection. A urinalysis is
another important test per
formed in the hospital
laboratory by the veteri
narian or his trained assist
ants.
X-ray testing is also
conducted in a modern
animal hospital to diagnose a
pet illness. The animal may
be given a white liquid
substance called barium to
swallow so that its body
organs can be studied on the
x-rays.
If surgery becomes neces
sary, your pet will be cared
for in much the same way as
a human would be. Gowns,
gloves, drapes and sterile
equipment are used along
with anesthetics and cardiac
monitors. This is done to
lower any risk to the pet and
to assure that infection does
not set in.

With constant progress in
techniques and equipment,
many veterinarians have
become specialists in one
kind of surgery. In such
cases, a pet with a specific
problem will be referred to a
specialist in much the same
way that a human would be.
Most pets, fortunately, do
well in a veterinary hospital.
For animals who are highly
emotional and need more
human attention, most up-to
date animal hospitals have
veterinarians who give indi
vidual attention and try to
substitute the tender loving
care pets miss from their
owners.
Generally speaking. I do
not think it advisable to visit
sick animals in the hospital.
It gets the animals excited,
and they tend to be
disappointed when left after
the visit. But occasionally, a
critically ill pet who seems to
have no will to get well will
respond when its owner
comes to the hospital with a
favorite tidbit of food.
Some veterinary hospitals
have special rooms where
owners can visit critically ill
pets, away from the rest of
the patients so that the
hospital routine is not
interrupted.
Even with new drugs, the
latest in laboratory equip
ment and expanding medical
knowledge, the value of
nursing care cannot be
overestimated. A pet can be
given every known drug and
yet not respond until it
receives tender care. With a
combination of veterinary
supervision, modern equip
ment and tender loving care,
your pet has a better chance
than ever to be restored to
good health in the modern
animai hospital.

THE INFLUENCE OF THE CHURCH ON AMERICA
There is a subtle, often unrecognized influence the Church
has had on our country. Look at the cities which are named
with names straight from the New Testament: St.
Petersburg. St. Paul. Bethlehem, and Corpus Christi (The
Body of Christ) just to name a few. The state of Florida even
owes its name to the Church. Florida means “the flowers of
Easter", so named when Ponce De Leon landed on the
Florida coast on Easter day.
Drive through the countryside sometime and notice the
names of the little communities and you would think that we
had been invaded by a group of pilgrims direct from the Holy
Land: Mt. Zion. Jericho. Calvary. Nazareth. Bethel, Salem.
We even owe our term “noon" for telling the time of day
to the Church. It came from a term used for the three-hour
worship services used by the early Church. The services
were known as "nones", so designated because of the “nona
hora". or the ninth hour, remembering the time of death of
Christ. In the 14th century the term "noon" was officially
designated as midday, or 12:00 o'clock.
Every time you sign a check, or date a legal document,
or read a newspaper, or use a calendar-you are indebted
to the church. Time is now dated as AT)., or Anno Domini,
'the year of our Lord.”
How much has our country been influenced by the
Church” Is your name John, or Peter, or James, or Andrew,
or Thomas, or Mark, or Luke, or Joseph? Perhaps your name
is Mary or Martha or Elizabeth” If so, your name came from
the friends and family of Christ. More women are named
Mary in America than any other name, over six million of
them. And one of every twelve men you meet will be named
John. Take away the names associated with the life of Christ
from our country and it would leave a terrific void.
The influence which the Church has had on this country
of ours is tremendous. Sometimes it is direct, often it is
indirect. But. either way. the influence is still there. And
without that influence our country would be vastly poorer.
How many men and women have been challenged to be
better because of the Church. How much the Church has
influenced the home. How great has been the influence of the
Church in behalf of little children. In the time of Christ,
unwanted children in Rome were thrown into the sewer. And
no one thought anything was wrong with that. But today our
country is sprinkled with homes for children who have no
home.
Without the influence of the Church in .America we could
not raise enough money to hire the policemen which would be
needed to guard our society-without doing damage to our
entire economy. Even our form of government-which we call
a democracy-owes it existance to the Church. You may
doubt that, but Karl Marx never doubted it. That is the
reason he sought to destroy the Church.
The influence of the Church of America. You may not
appreciate the Church. You may shun it and scorn it and
ignore it and even criticize it. But you have been profoundly
influenced by it. are greatly indebted to it and will never
cease to be in debt to it regardless of vour attitude tow’ard it.
You may never enter the doors of the Church, but you are in
debt to it.
I feel comfortably within the mark when I say that no
other institution has influenced our country’ for good in
anywhere near the proportion which the Christian Church
has.
How much has the Church influenced America? More
than we think. More than we know. More than we can
appreciate. And certainly, more than we can ever repay.
