made to Jake and us. Thanks
to all the friends at the

FOOD SPECIALS
Throughout the year
various foods can be good
values if purchased when
they are “in season”.
Seasonal buying guides
predict that apples, brussel
sprouts, cranberries,
endive, sweet potatoes,
tangelos, and tangerines
are values you should
check for this month as you
shop.
FRUIT JUICES, ADES,
AND DRINKS
Many folks enjoy fruit
juices for breakfast or as
refreshment during the
day. There has been some
confusion over terminology
concerning fruit bever
ages. Although most fruit
beverages on the market
are fortified with Vitamin
C, they may not be pure
fruit juice. Fruit juices,
fruit juice drinks and fruit
drinks are not the same.
-Juices are the strained
liquid (usually with a
preservative added) from
any fruit or vegetable and
is sold in cans, glass
bottles, or jars.
- Fruit juice drinks usually
consist of 50 percent fruit
juice and 50 percent added
water and sweetners.
-- Fruit drinks are also a
mixture of juice, water,
and sweetner but it does
not require as large a
percentage of juice. For
example, it may have only
35 percent juice.
The next time you
purchase a fruit beverage
be sure and read the label
and know exactly what you
are buying.

FREEZING PREPARED
FOODS
Now is a perfect time to
prepare some of the foods
you will be needing for
busy-day meals or parties
that will be taking place
this month. You can
prepare food at a conven
ient time. Also you can be
prepared for unexpected
guests. Many foods freeze
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1976
well but these are some
exceptions:
-Cooked egg whites be
come tough and rubbery
when frozen.
- Cooked Irish potatoes in
stews and soups become
mushy and may darken.
- Mayonnaise separates
during freezing and thaw
ing.
- Custards and cream pie
fillings become watery and
lumpy.
- Meringue toughens and
sticks to paper after a few
days of freezing.
- Cake icings made with
egg whites become frothy
or “weep” when thawed.
Cream fillings and soft
frostings are unsatisfac
tory when frozen.
- Macaroni, spaghetti and
some rice has a warm
overed flavor and often is
mushy.
Good packaging is a
MUST. A good quality
container or wrapping
material should be used. A
wrap should be moisture
vapor resistant as well as
clean and durable. Cello
phane wraps become brit
tle at low temperatures so
they should be used only
when over-wrapped with
another type wrap.
DON’T FORGET!!!
You have another chance
to get some more ideas on
holiday foods and decora
tions by attending “A
County Christmas” the
program to be sponsored
by the Butts County
Extension Service. The
program is scheduled from
12:00 Noon until 2:00 p.m.

FROM HERE TO THERE
Sitting on my back porch
In my old rocking chair,
My eyes behold familiar scenes
Of beauty grand and rare!
My ears are tuned to bluebirds’ songs
With melody free from care!
My heart is quivering with the leaves
On luscious limbs out there!
My soul is reaching for the sky
Where works of God the heavens declare!
