Citizens’ Band radios-
CB’s. There are millions of
them across the country. And
sales are increasing every
day. The channels are
getting crowded.
So, the Federal Communi
cations Commission (FCC)
announced that starting
January 1, 1977, the number
of channels available for CB
use would be increased from
23 to 40. But you won’t be able
to buy the 40 channel sets
until after January 1. In the
meantime, some manufac
turers-but not all--say they
will convert 23 channel sets
bought now to 40 channel sets
after January 1.
The Federal Trade Com
mission (FTC) warns that
some 23 channel sets can’t be
easily remade to carry 40
channels. They can still be
used after January 1 on the 23
original channels, and you
may want to buy a 23 channel
CB set now since many are
sale priced. But you should
think carefully about your
decision.
Here are some points to
consider before you buy a
CB:
Do you want to buy a 23 or
40 channel CB radio? Do you
really need the added 17
channels?
If you want to have 40
channels in 1977, will the
manufacturer promise in
writing to change your 23
channel set to carry 40
channels? (Remember, not
all companies will change
their sets. And it is illegal,
according to FCC rules, for
you to change them your
self.)
If you do decide to have the
set changed, can you take it
back to the store where you
bought it, or must you mail it
to the factory yourself? How
long will it take? Will you get
the same set back, or a
different set?
How much extra will you
have to pay the manufac
turer for the conversion?
How much more would a
brand new 40 channel set cost
than a 23 channel set? Is the
price of the 23 channel set too
good a buy for you to pass
up?
A 23 channel set may be a
good buy, right now. It may
be all you need. Just get all
the facts before you buy.
For further information,
check with the closest FTC
regional office.
And, if you do buy a CB
radio, you can get a copy of
Citizens’ Band Rules and
Regulations by sending $1.50
to Consumer Information
Center, Dept. 097 E, Pueblo,
Colorado 81009. The free
catalog, Consumer Informa
tion, a listing of over 200
federal consumer publica
tions, is also available by
sending a postcard to the
same address.

Dear St. Nick,
I want to thank you for
being so nice to me last year.
From Christmas Eve until the
Eve of Epiphany, or the day be
fore “Old Christmas,” the ob
servance of the Yuletide in Italy
is of a religious nature. But on
the Eve of Epiphany it is dif
ferent. It was on this night that
La Befana was supposed to come.
She is the only one figuring in an
Italian Christmas who could be
compared to Santa Claus.
La Befana was a woman, and
not “a right jolly old elf.” She
was said to possess a stem na
ture and a rather forbidding ap
pearance. On Twelfth Night, or
the Eve of Epiphany as it is
known in Italy, she entered
through the chimney and into
the room where the stockings
were hung. She carried a cane
in one hand and a bell in the
other. She announced her arrival
with the bell. So, when the lit
tle children of Italy heard the
bell ringing they would hurry
off to sleep before Befana comes.
In the stockings of the good
little girls and boys she would
put gifts. But in the stockings
of the bad children she would
leave only bags of ashes! It was
a scramble early in the morning
of Epiphany to see whether their
conduct had been approved or
disapproved by wise Befana.
I would like for you to bring
me a talking telephone, a
jewelry box, and a toy box.
Thank you very much.
Brenda Etheridge
Am and your dear ones,
we wish a holiday filled with the
warmth and wonder of Christmas,
o it has been a pleasure to serve you.

Food surveys reveal that
breakfast skippers seldom
make up for the loss of
nutrients during the rest of
the day. They often how
ever, make up and probably
exceed the calorie intake.
Breakfast should supply
from one-quarter to one
third of the nutrients needed
for the day.
